'Supernatural' Depicted One of the Most Terrifying Versions of the Devil

It's a shame that we didn't get enough screen time with this villain during the show.

I have been constantly binging the television show, Supernatural, because it's going to be leaving this month. Even though the final season has been a major mixed bag for me, I still enjoy watching the main characters, the two brothers known as Sam and Dean Winchester. While this show does have a lot of fans, others like myself, agree that the best seasons was 1–5.

This was when the show was at it's true prime, when it came to the excellent horror storylines we got during the tough journey of the main siblings. They run into demons, angels, monsters, and even insane prophecies, that end up coming true. One specific prophecy was that the Devil was going to one day take over the body of Sam Winchester, using him to end the world.

In my personal opinion, the older seasons was when the Devil was at his darkest. He was terrifying, and a calculated monster that was determined to take over the body of Sam, a dude that never wanted to chase the life of saving the world from the supernatural. He came off the most innocent out of both brothers, and it was so tragic, knowing his dark fate.

The Devil chose him as his vessel, and poor Sam was forced to eventually say yes, allowing him to enter his body.

And what we got was such creepy acting from the actor who played Sam. This guy seriously showed off his acting chops in one particular scene that stayed with me the first time I had seen this moment in season 5. It's about two minutes long, but it feels like a lifetime, due to the incredible acting we get from this guy.

He starts to flex one of his hands, like the Devil is trying to get used to his new body. It comes off so creepy and eerie, and the smile he gives off in the end was the cherry on top. Then he speaks to the real Sam, in a mirror, and it's so strange to hear an innocent and cheerful guy suddenly start to sound cold and evil. As the Devil, he carries himself in a calm manner, speaking in a monotone voice that is so unlike Sam Winchester.

This is one of the best scenes I have ever seen in media when it comes to the Devil, because of how scary this scene comes off. It's so strange to see a character we get used to during the course of five seasons, only for him to turn into a monster. I think that's why this scene pays off so well toward the finale of the season, and I get why a lot of fans think that this was the best version of the Devil we got during the runtime of the show.

After season 5, I have to admit, the Devil ended up becoming such a repetitive character that got annoying so fast. He went from a creepy bastard to an angsty teenager that never got his way. And even though I loved the original actor that played him, I struggled to get used to his character, because I got tired of him pretty fast. We did get another version of the Devil that did pay off, when it came to him possessing another character that fans became a huge fan of.

But in my opinion, the Devil taking over the body of Sam was the best depiction we have ever gotten in the show. It's a massive shame that we never got enough screen time with this version of the Devil in the show, but maybe it was for the best.

When it comes to the most iconic villains in horror, sometimes less screentime is for the best.
