Scary forest creatures

Short story

By Matěj Lukáš BudkaPublished 3 years ago 2 min read

Deep within the heart of a dense, ancient forest, a tale of terror whispered through the twisted branches. The villagers knew better than to venture into those woods at night, for it was said that otherworldly creatures roamed freely, their malevolent presence suffusing the air.

One moonlit eve, a brave young man named Ethan dared to challenge the legends. Fuelled by curiosity and a touch of foolishness, he set off into the enigmatic forest, armed with nothing but a flickering lantern and an unyielding spirit. The wind rustled the leaves ominously as he stepped deeper into the wilderness.

The eerie silence was broken by a faint, haunting melody that seemed to drift from unseen lips. Ethan's heart raced, but his determination propelled him forward. Suddenly, he stumbled upon a forgotten stone altar, overgrown with moss and surrounded by gnarled roots. The air grew colder, and the hair on his arms stood on end.

As the young man cautiously approached, a chorus of ethereal voices filled the night. Shadows danced between the trees, casting sinister figures upon the forest floor. The melody swelled, and Ethan's steps faltered. He strained to see what lurked within the inky darkness, but the creatures remained veiled in mystery.

With a final surge of courage, Ethan raised his lantern high, illuminating the scene before him. His breath caught in his throat as his eyes beheld the beings that haunted the forest. They were ethereal and otherworldly, their delicate bodies adorned with shimmering wings and eyes that gleamed with an otherworldly light. They were the mystical creatures that the villagers feared— the forest's guardians turned malevolent.

Their enchanting melody morphed into a cacophony of twisted notes, echoing with malice. The creatures moved with unnatural grace, their elegant forms contorted and grotesque. Ethan stumbled backward, his lantern quivering in his trembling hand. Yet, he found himself unable to look away from the horrors that had been unveiled.

As if sensing his presence, the creatures turned their attention towards him. Their eyes burned with an insatiable hunger, and their ethereal bodies drifted closer. Ethan's heart pounded in his chest as he realized the gravity of his mistake. The legends were true, and he was but a trespasser in their realm.

In a desperate attempt to escape, he turned and ran, his heart pounding in his ears. But the creatures were swift and relentless, their unearthly cries echoing through the night. The forest seemed to conspire against him, roots snaking up from the ground to ensnare his ankles.

The once-familiar paths twisted and shifted, leading him deeper into the darkness. Fear gripped his every step, pushing him to the edge of his sanity. Yet, he pressed on, the glimmers of hope flickering within his soul.

The chase continued, the forest becoming an ever-changing labyrinth. Just as despair threatened to consume him, a faint ray of light pierced through the trees. With a final burst of strength, Ethan burst forth from the forest's clutches, collapsing onto the safety of the village outskirts.

Breathless and trembling, he glanced back at the forest, still shrouded in an otherworldly mist. The creatures had not pursued him beyond its boundary, but their presence lingered in his mind. From that day forward, Ethan carried the weight of his encounter, forever mindful of the haunting melodies and mystic creatures that lurked within the depths of the forest.
