It didn't matter that sweat was sticking to their skin or that they were constantly tripping over the giant tree roots and slick moss. All that mattered was going straight, getting closer to it. Walking towards this feeling it wasn't even a feeling but more of a gravitational force pulling them towards something unknown. With each step the air seemed to get heavier and the voice in thier head getting louder.
Stop
Turn around
Don’t
But they couldn't ignore this or stop even if they wanted to. Up ahead they could see a clearing that had an almost ethereal glow. As soon as they entered the glowing clearing everything seemed to stop. A peaceful feeling washed over everything around them making them feel safe. Everything seemed almost magical if it weren't for the Treehouse it looked out of place with it's rotting wood and putrid smell. Upon closer inspection other than the obvious it looked to be an ordinary treehouse. They probably shouldn’t have climbed into the tree house but they did. They probably shouldn't have gone in just to see what it looked like, out of curiosity, but they did. Good thing they did cause in the middle of the room was a set of duffle bags and a little black notebook. They really shouldn't look inside the bags but of course they did. And good thing they did cause there must have been at least $20,000 in both bags. Almost like the wind was whispering they heard a silent,
Are you sure
realistically though who's going to turn down $20,000 so yeah of course they took it. As they made their way out of the forest with the duffle bags. A chill ran down their spine when the winds seem to whisper again,
Good luck.
Making their way out of the forest to their beat dub car that got them stuck byt the forest in the first place. They prayed their car would start at least long enough to get to a mechanic since they could now afford to go to one. Luck was on their side as it roared to life making its way back to town. After stopping at the mechanic then dropping by the bank to deposit a large sum of their findings, not all though as to not seem suspicious. They made their way home automatically going upstairs to order any and everything they wanted online. $1,200 later they had gotten everything they'd really wanted. Being a 19 year old stay-at-home kid they really didn't have that many responsibilities. Their mom however did deserve a break now $2,500 later their bills were paid for the next month. As if on cue their exhausted mother came home and collapsed on the couch. Looking at her phone she let out,
“Huh,”
“Something wrong Mom?”
“ No nothing, something just a bit strange.”
That seemed to be today's theme.
“ I guess I paid the bills ahead of time and forgot”
“ oh, that's a good thing though right?”
“ Yeah”, she said, “ It just means I can relax” she said with a happy sigh, After kissing their forehead they were upstairs. Ismail came to their face knowing she sleeps soundly. Going to their own room they noticed something in their plant's pocket. A little black notebook had made its strange little way into their pocket. They hadn't really gotten the chance to look through it before now. Looking through the pages it seemed they were all blank. Maybe they could use it later or give it as a present so in the back of the drawer it went. After breakfast the next morning why not go to the mall to spend some cash. With cash and keys and one hand they got into their car to head off. To their surprise the little black notebook was in the passenger seat. That's so weird they thought giving it a quick flip through again. This time it said something he must have missed the first time. Beware blue cars.
Very ominous they thought, personally they had nothing against Blue Cars. Apparently the book did though without another thought they made their way towards the mall. How had the notebook gotten to their car? They were sure they'd put it back in their desk drawer. They hadn't written anything inside either, they were sure of it. Blaring honking snapped them out of their deep thought when a dark blue car just decided they needed to cut them off, making them swerve out of the way. Fear gripped their heart and throat as they barely avoided what would've been a horrible accident. They ended up leaving with only one or two bags, nothing noteworthy inside. Walking out of the exit a man with a clipboard came up to them, “Do you have a second to donate? It only takes a minute and it really helps out local hospitals”. Just then they noticed the blood drive t-shirt he was sporting and the station behind him. Looking at their watch they figured why not I've got time. it really didn't take that long and afterwards they were given a cookie and told to eat a big dinner. Getting back into their car they noticed a poke in their pants pocket again lo and behold it was the little black notebook again. This was for sure getting freaky now as they knew they hadleft it in the car. Looking inside once more something new was on the next page,
Don’t eat it
this again didn't really make any sense, but that was going to be in the back of their head. With the company of their mother they went to their favorite restaurant for a much needed big dinner. Ordering their favorite clam chowder with fresh pepper and a little lemon about to dig in when they caught a whiff of the dish. Something didn't smell right but maybe it was just a new recipe or they just hadn't remembered it the same and ate it anyway. After desert of course they went home to get a good night's rest when all of a sudden something was very wrong. Their stomach was doing things that couldn't have been good like going to the hospital not good. An hour later they were in the hospital being treated for severe food poisoning luck that it hadn’t developed into something worse. The little black notebook came up from the back of their mind, had it actually tried to warn them of this? No way though it must’ve been just a strange coincidence, as that seemed to continue to be a theme lately. A few days passed and they were discharged from the hospital feeling right as rain looking forward to going home. They still couldn’t shake the thought though that the little black notebook might have something to do with these strange coincidences.
After a week or two with no more incidences they figured everything was back to normal, chalking it up to mean nothing. Everything they had wanted to do with the money they had already done so really the question was what to do next. It was a luck they thought that had led them to the money in the first place so why not pass it on. Check in hand they went to the nearest hospital to donate what they had left to charity. Giving it over as an anonymous donor and left before having any questions asked.
Their smile was as wide as can be feeling good that they were able to share what luck they had happened to come into. Nearby was a newly constructed park that felt like the perfect place to take a stroll through though it was a little late. Walking down the path it began to get windy and dark quite fast. They found it strange that there was no one at the park enjoying it like they were, after all it was quite new. The wind picked up giving them shivers down their spine right as the lights came on to illuminate their path. It had gotten so late and dark so fast without them noticing it all suddenly felt very ominous. No one seemed to be around but they could feel eyes on them, staring, s feeling of dread sat heavy within them growing with each silent second.
“Hello?”, they called out. “Listen this isn’t funny just come out I know you’re there...If you’re gonna mug me just do it don’t hide in the shadows.”, everything was now completely silent like the mute button had been turned on. A thin layer of sweat now covered them giving them goosebumps when the silent wind shifted by. Again the poking feeling in his pocket had came again, already knowing the little black notebook had mysteriously appeared yet again. Frustrated and scared to their core they opened the book but yelled out again, “Stop hiding you coward! Come out!”, spinning around to try to find the eyes staring at him. On the back of their neck they could feel a warm breath, “We’re not hiding”, looking down at the little black notebook it said only one thing
Run.
