Putt Putt Park

A Hidden Gem

By Seashell Harpspring Published 6 months ago 4 min read

Alba wanted a cute night out with Amos after a long week. She wanted to play putt putt, but was tired of the same ones in the town. She searched on her phone and found one that was located within a small town next to their own. They drove the 50 minutes in order to enjoy the new found spot. When they arrived the place seemed rusted, abandoned, and overgrown. They walked into the front building to pay. A man who seemed to be around 80 was standing at a desk. He did not look up and continued to read the book in front of him. He only pointed to the sign next to him that showed, "18 holes: $5 per person."

Alba put a 10 dollar bill on the table. The man picked up the money and stashed the bill into his pocket, still reading the book and saying nothing. The title of the book read "A hidden gem." Amos picked up the putters and balls for them and they headed outside. The place was beautiful with flowing streams and plants of many varieties. Most putt putts had higher leveling to make sure the player didn't just stand on flat ground, but this had several different levels to climb and many little area with structures one could hide within. "The book that man was reading seems to describe this place," Amos handed Alba her ball to begin at the first hole.

"It really is so gorgeous. Glad we looked outside our usual places to play," she hit her ball and began the fun. They were having a great time laughing and climbing through the great terrain. There was so many enchanting paths and swerving area to hit the ball and possibly not see a hole in one until reaching the other side. All was wonderful until Amos hit the ball in what he saw as a clear path, but a mushroom appeared and made the ball bounce back. Alba was giggling at the mishap until her turn went even more awry when she hit the ball, another mushroom appeared and sent her heavy hit ball flying into the water.

"What is with the mushrooms?" Alba asks. She turns and realizes going back for another ball would be too far of a walk. She makes her way to jump into the steam. It is clear and she can see all of the fish, making it not seem like such a big deal to go ahead and bob for the ball back. She finds and grabs for the ball, but when she turns around, the stream has turned to purple sludge. She panics at the change and grabs forward onto the rocky side, but the once before slick rocks now had jagged edges and they sliced her hand. She screamed as Amos was already reaching down to drag her out. There were cuts all over her because of the scrapes coming up.

"I was having so much fun, but it feels like we have done way more that 18 holes at this point," Amos mentioned in realization.

"Yeah, let's just go now," they both started heading out, but tree branch growths appeared, blocking their path. Carved within the trees was the words, "You must play!"

They went ahead and obeyed and got back on course, hitting the balls once again. At this, the trees vanished and they were able to move forward. When they were headed to the next area, there was a ball vending machine, but the price was $5 a ball. "The balls in here are the cost of the putt putt time itself?" Amos asked.

"Oh well, just buy some so we don't have to deal with diving for balls again because looks like there is no way back at this moment," Alba encouraged while shoving most of the cash she had into the vending machine and filling her purse with balls. The next time Alba hit a ball to vanish into the water, she pulled out a new one. That time it didn't matter about purchasing the extras because a fish sucked the ball up into its mouth and shot it back at her head like a mini fish cannon.

"Well this time got the ball back anyways," Amos picked up the ball while examining the bump on the side of Alba's head. He gave her a hug and they continued, weary of ball kickback. They were so focused on mushrooms and balls though that they did not see a fake bear behind them within the cave had come to life and was ready to attack! Amos heard the roar at the last second looking back and pushing Alba out of the way. This caused them to fall and start tumbling down the hills and terrain of the area until they rolled all the way back to the front building with the old man. They walked in and put away their putters while the man still did not look at them and how battered they were. He was still just frozen there with the same book in his hand. They drove out of the empty parking lot trying to decide if the balls they bought were magic or just the course, and to never return to that particular putt putt park again.
