Neverland

For The Spooky Micro Challenge

By Alexander McEvoyPublished about a year ago 1 min read

There was only one rule. Don't open the door.

Just that one rule. Foolish child. Only one and yet you could not keep those filthy inquisitive hands to yourself.

Tell me, how did it feel with your hand on the knob? Knowing that this, this one simple act, was the only thing expressly forbidden? Powerful I'd imagine. Such is the folly of youth.

Now, though, I tell you that you have cause for celebration! Because, you see, that fondest wish you once sheltered has come true. Believe me when I say, your family and friends will never have the chance to grow old.

Ravages of age shall not weary them. The endless churning of years will not grind them down until they are but dust beneath the boots of their replacements.

So, tell me, how did it feel?

How did turning that ice cold handle feel?

Was the door heavier than you expected, and light as the smallest of lies?

Do you now hear the interminable buzzing of flies?

Trust me when I say that your friends will never grow old. Never grow sick or weak thanks to the turning of seasons and the endless motions of the stars.

But, you will never see them again. Never knowing for certain that what I say is true. Because the passage beyond this door is off limits to the likes of you.

Open it and feed more souls to my starving fire. Open the door and let the bodies pile higher. Open the door and send more to me, for that is the only option that yet remains. Send more to me in Neverland. Hope without hope that my words are true.

You broke the only rule. That day you opened the door. Now, you have to do it some more.

I love this Alex!! I got a bit of a metaphorical feel from it, the idea that once you've made a choice (good, bad or in between) you must face the consequence no matter the cost! Very cleverly done!!

  • I was thinking this was gonna be about Peter Pan's Neverland 😅 This was sooo creepy! Loved the piling bodies hehehehehe
