Mystical stories on the south coast

By Julis AmateurPublished about a year ago 2 min read

In the dense forests of Sukabumi, West Java, where the mist hangs thick and ancient trees whisper secrets, there existed a village named Cikawir. This village, shrouded in mystery, was known for its deep connection with the supernatural. Locals spoke in hushed tones of a hidden realm where black magic and witchcraft thrived.

The legend that wove through the village was about a powerful sorceress named Nyi Roro Kidul, who was believed to dwell in the enchanted depths of Mount Halimun. She was said to command both the spirits of the forest and the dark energies of the earth. Her powers were feared and revered, as she could grant immense power but also wreak havoc on those who dared to cross her.

One particularly stormy night, a young man named Rendra, known for his skepticism and scientific mind, arrived in Cikawir. He had heard tales of miraculous cures and curses tied to black magic and was determined to uncover the truth behind these mystical stories. Rendra's arrival coincided with a series of inexplicable events: crops failing, livestock disappearing, and villagers falling ill under mysterious circumstances.

Rendra's investigations led him to an elderly woman named Nenek Sumi, the village’s keeper of secrets. With a face etched by time and eyes that glimmered with hidden knowledge, she reluctantly agreed to share the tale of a forbidden ritual that had been performed long ago. According to Nenek Sumi, a group of villagers had once summoned Nyi Roro Kidul to seek her favor for wealth and prosperity. The sorceress had granted their wish, but at a terrible price—the villagers were bound to her will and had to sacrifice a soul every year.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Rendra ventured into the forest to find the hidden temple where the villagers had made their pact with the sorceress. Deep in the heart of the forest, he discovered ancient carvings and a forgotten altar, now overgrown with vines and moss. As the storm raged around him, he felt a cold presence, and suddenly, the mist coalesced into a spectral figure: Nyi Roro Kidul herself.

The sorceress appeared as a majestic figure with eyes like glowing embers. She spoke of the bargain made long ago and revealed that the village's suffering was a result of the unfulfilled pact. To break the curse, Rendra had to perform a counter-ritual to undo the binding spell.

With Nenek Sumi’s guidance, Rendra conducted the ritual at dawn, when the first light of day broke through the storm clouds. The ceremony involved offerings of fruits and herbs, and chanting ancient incantations that called upon the spirits of the land for forgiveness and release.

As the final chant echoed through the forest, a sudden calm fell over Sukabumi. The mist lifted, the storm clouds dispersed, and the village's troubles began to recede. The crops began to flourish again, and the villagers' health improved.

Rendra’s skepticism had been replaced with a newfound respect for the ancient practices of Sukabumi. The village celebrated his bravery and the end of their suffering, and though he left Cikawir with a deeper understanding of the mystical, he also carried with him a sense of wonder and respect for the powers that lay hidden within the ancient forests of West Java.
