Mysterious Red Sari Spirit & Haunted Tamarind Tree
True Scary Stories
The incident happened with his elder uncle, but at the request of Tapas Bhai, we are keeping his elder uncle’s name confidential. The time frame of this incident was around 1994 or 1995. During that period, the Bila (wetland) would have a lot of water in the rainy season. One day, Tapas Bhai’s uncle brought a kind of item made from palm leaves, called “Kunda” in the village language. He had gone to cut grass and also to collect Kachuri leaves and similar things for the cows’ feed. While bringing back those things for feeding the cows, there is a place near Baktarpur Bila. This place is, well, how should I put it, an area with trees, a homestead-like place. There stands a Hijal tree there. When his uncle was returning, he sat down under that Hijal tree to rest for a while. While resting absentmindedly, he broke a branch off that Hijal tree. After resting, he normally returned home. Once home, he fed the cows the grass and Kachuri leaves he had collected. Everything seemed fine, but that very night, the uncle suddenly started acting mad. He began speaking incoherently, did not want to stay indoors, and left the house. He scolded his family members and spoke nonsense to everyone. No one was able to hold him back—one person alone couldn’t restrain him, and even many together could not. He left the house. The uncle felt as if something had possessed or affected him in a bad way. When that negative force acted upon him, he felt as if someone was sitting on him, his chest became heavy, and it felt like a heavy stone was placed on his chest. He could hardly speak properly. This problem lasted similarly for about five to six days and then went away. He became completely normal, and everything—his words, behavior, and actions—were perfectly fine. About a month after this incident, the problem started again. One day, suddenly, the uncle couldn’t be found anywhere. No one could find him, and everyone started searching all around for him.
But uncle couldn't be found anywhere. Finally, uncle was found in a jungle-like area, and from there he was caught and brought back. Then the mosque's imam was called, and when Imam Sahib came, he performed a spiritual cleansing on uncle. After that, everything was fine, no problems. A few days later, Tapas Bhai's uncle was going to take a neighboring girl along to the hospital. The purpose of going to the hospital was exactly that—they set out for the hospital, not for any personal issue.
At that time, there was a school near Tapas Bhai's house, which was called a BRAC school. BRAC is an NGO that runs this school. They crossed that BRAC school and hired a baby taxi to take the girl to a hospital in Dhaka. They had specifically set out to take her to the hospital, not for anything else. When they reached Pubail by taxi, there was a bridge there with a large banyan tree beside it. At that spot, their taxi got a flat tire. But since they had a spare tire, they immediately fixed the problem, by God's grace, and continued on to Dhaka.
They completed the hospital work without any trouble and returned home. That night, the jinn affected uncle again. The jinn said that it had been lying on the road where uncle was traveling by taxi, and that was why the taxi tire got punctured. The jinn explained that it had lifted the tire onto its body, which caused the tire to get damaged. As a result, the jinn punctured the taxi tire. The jinn further said they were lucky it only damaged the tire and didn’t flip over the entire vehicle.
Everyone present then understood that the tire puncture on uncle's journey to Dhaka was actually caused by the jinn. After initial treatment, the situation temporarily returned to normal by Allah's mercy. For about six months, small incidents occurred with uncle, but nothing significant happened. After six months, one night uncle was missing again. Throughout the night, Taposh Bhai’s relatives, along with Taposh Bhai and others, thoroughly searched the entire village but found no trace of uncle. Even after the night passed and morning came, the search for uncle continued.
Around noon, uncle’s eldest daughter’s brother-in-law arrived at Taposh Bhai’s house. Uncle’s eldest daughter had been married off in Tongi. He came and told uncle’s eldest daughter, "Ma Bhai (sister-in-law), is there any problem at your house? Uncle came to our house during Fajr prayer time. His whole body was covered in mud. We can’t understand what happened." Upon hearing this from the brother-in-law, Taposh Bhai’s cousin and the others initially breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that uncle had been found and was healthy.
Then everyone was surprised to think, how did uncle walk so late at night all the way from Baktarpur to Tongi? Such a long distance. Moreover, since his body was covered in muddy soil, it is assumed that he must have taken a muddy water path instead of the main road. Anyway, uncle was brought back home, but he couldn’t say anything about where or how he had gone.
Later, a few acquaintances suggested a well-known Kabiraj (traditional healer) who lived in Chandura, Gazipur. Uncle was taken to that Kabiraj, who then summoned the jinn upon uncle. It was then revealed that the jinn was only 60 years old, and this age is considered very young when it comes to jinn. The incident involved the uncle who had been affected by the jinn, who was actually a child jinn. What happened was that one day, during the rainy season, the uncle was collecting grass, kachuri leaves, and tana leaves from the bill (wetland) to feed the cows. On his way back home, he rested under a hijal tree. At that moment, a branch of the tree broke. Meanwhile, the child jinn and some of his companions were playing while sitting on the tree. They got irritated because of the uncle breaking the branch. That’s why the child jinn affected the uncle.
Afterwards, a traditional healer (kabiraj) performed some special rituals and called the jinn's parents. They were informed about the whole matter and explained that since the jinn was very young, he did not fully understand the situation. As his guardians, they promised that he would cause no further trouble, but they had one condition: since the problem started because of the hijal tree’s branch breaking, they requested a black goat to be left with them in that place. Everyone agreed unanimously to this condition set by the jinn.
Following this, the eldest son of Tapas Bhai's uncle left a black goat under the hijal tree at a specific time. Since then, there have been no more problems with the uncle. The uncle is still alive, healthy, and well, Alhamdulillah, as Tapas Bhai informed. This was essentially an incident involving Tapas Bhai’s uncle.
The person I heard this story from is Arfan "Pappu" Bhai. He works at North South University. His home is in the Dattapara area of Bonmala Road, Tongi, Gazipur. The area they live in is actually called Dattapara. Back when kings lived in Gazipur, there was a Hindu king named Datta who lived in that area. The area is named after him.
Pappu Bhai's grandfather built the house here sometime between 1965 and 1968. The property was a total of 28 to 30 katha. His grandfather had five sons and divided the property among them. They had all kinds of trees in their house, including big palm trees, mango trees, and tamarind trees. This incident revolves around a tamarind tree.
They had a pond where Pappu Bhai and everyone would bathe and fish. Next to the pond was that tamarind tree, which is central to this story. The incident happened about 28 years ago when he was in fifth grade.
A live-in tutor, an "Apa," stayed at their house. She taught everyone Arabic, so they called her "Master Niye Apa" (Respected Teacher). She always tried to be in a state of ablution. She would give Pappu Bhai water blessed with Quranic verses for minor problems, and by the grace of Allah, her blessed water would work. She also regularly offered Tahajjud prayers.
So, one night, as usual, she was going towards the washroom very early in the morning – when I say morning, I mean very early dawn – to freshen up for prayer after performing ablution. The washroom was a minute's walk from her room. She was an elderly woman, so it took her a little longer to walk back and forth.
To get to the washroom, she had to walk by the pond and past the tamarind tree. There was a tube well right under the tamarind tree. Before going to the washroom, when Master Niye Apa was going to the well to get water, she saw someone standing next to the well wearing a red sari. She thought it was a housewife from one of the houses nearby. She tried to get closer. As she took two steps, the woman in the sari also took two steps forward. As she got a little closer, the woman went and stood at the base of the tamarind tree.
So, Master Apa was repeatedly asking, "Whose wife are you, why aren't you talking?" Saying this, she tried to get a little closer. As she tried to get closer, that woman, in one leap, hung from the tamarind tree, just like someone hangs from a fence. We used to hang from the bamboo part of the fence when we were little, holding onto it. She was hanging just like that. Master Apa, not understanding anything, grabbed the sari pallu of the sari-clad woman, since she was hanging. She thought that maybe the woman had some mental issues, that she had left her house at night, which is why she was acting like this. She was thinking like that. As soon as she grabbed the edge of the sari, the red sari-clad woman turned her head and said, "Let go, let go!" Until then, Master Apa hadn't really seen her face clearly, but as soon as she turned her head and said this, Master Apa saw her face. The moment she saw the woman's face, she let go of the sari pallu and started reciting prayers. According to Master Nia Apa, the red sari-clad woman's face was completely black, pitch black, her teeth were yellow and sharp, and the teeth were kind of zigzag, like the letter Z we write in English. The teeth were like that. We often see the teeth of a saw; it could be compared to that somewhat. And the eyes were white, and the pupils were like a cat's eyes. After seeing this, she started reciting Allah's name and quickly took water from the tube well and went to the washroom. It's not that she went into a room. Because she had let go of her, and she used to pray regularly, she knew that there wouldn't be any problem. Later, she came out of the washroom and didn't see that thing anymore. She performed ablution again and went to her room. By the grace of Allah, she didn't have any physical illness, like a fever or anything. And after that, she never saw that thing again. The next day, she shared this incident with everyone. This incident is known to everyone in Arfan Pappu Bhai's family. So, that was it.
