Halloween is one of the best days of any year. All the amazing costumes, candy and horror films that you can ask for. The list of horror films worth watching grows every single year but here are the top 5 that always stick with me no matter what time of year it is.

5. Malignant- The James Wan horror film was a complete breath of fresh air for the genre. Wan crafted a story that while impossible realistically made sense in the context of the movie. That is all anyone can ask for. The final 25 minutes are absolutely insane even by horror standards. I hope it remains a standalone film because it truly was a wild ride that doesnt deserve to be tarnished.

4. The Silence of The Lambs- I understand this could be classified as a psychological thriller but to me the events of this film are horrific. When I first watched this movie I was blown away by the story, the acting and the tension that occurs throughout. Everything about this film screams top notch production and it leaves you forever understanding the horrific crimes that can occur out there in the world. This movie at a young age was my first exposure to the darker side of cinema and it forever changed my viewing perspective.

3. The Devil's Rejects- Rob Zombie is much better when doing original horror then when he attempts a remake. This movie is brutal and there may be better films overall but this is one of my personal favorites. It all builds and builds and the violence is some of the most gory and brutal you can come across. Zombie blends that well with a plausible story and acting only he can get from his cast. The final sequence is crazy intense and very brutal. Something only a bold story teller could pull off.

2. It Chapters One and Two- There is no way to make the list and not add both. They both play to the psychological aspect and the generational aspect of horror. Right from the opening scene with the sewer all the way to the final showdown with the losers club, these two movies keep you hooked and thoroughly entertained. They feature a young cast who transition well into great adult castings and that truly makes the experience that much more compelling. A true epic two part horror masterpiece, Pennywise the dancing clown has never been creepier than this.

1. Halloween (1978)- Nothing beats this old school classic. Absolutely nothing. It starts off very dark with the murder of Judith and never lets up. The next scene is the escape 15 years later and then the following is the events that forever linked Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. Everything about this movie is hardcore horror at its finest. A menacing villain that is described as void of humanity is the perfect character at the centre of a franchise that spawned many sequels over the years. Some good, some bad but no one can deny the cultural impact Michael Myers has had as an iconic figure in the horror genre.

Spooky season is fun. Nothing quite compares to good jump scares in a dark basement with friends or being afraid to sleep in the dark for days after a viewing. Whatever your horror preference is there seems to be something for everyone in the wide variety of films that will leave our dreams haunted. Let me know what your personal favorites are and why! Halloween should be a fun time for everyone. Enjoy the festivities with your friends and family and remember to stay safe.
