Do you like taking a quiet and reflective walk through the woods? Do you enjoy hearing the melodic chirps of songbirds and hearing the breeze rustle the leaves?

A walk through the woods can be quite tranquil. However, if you’re thinking about a peaceful stroll through these forests, you might want to reconsider!

Old House Woods — Diggs, Virginia

Located near the coast of the Chesapeake Bay, Old House Woods is sure to be a relaxing destination. Better think again.

Ghostly pirates searching for lost treasure? Flying ghost ships? If you think that’s weird, what about headless ghost cows or armor wearing skeletons?

Well, those are the very things you might encounter if you venture through Old House Woods in Diggs, Virginia.

These woods are extremely dense, a perfect place to find ghosts.

There have been sightings of a phantom ship sailing along the coast. It gets a lot stranger! The ship approaches the coast, getting closer and closer but it does not stop. Instead, it hovers up the coast and floats into the dense woods, shrouded by a dense fog.

If you don’t see a phantom ship, you just might see ghostly pirates searching the dense woods for buried treasure. Could they be the same pirates that came in on the phantom ship?

If you thought phantom ships and pirate ghosts were enough to creep you out, wait until you hear about the phantom headless cows or the skeletal beings asking for directions.

If you journey through these woods, you might encounter other ghostly sightings like phantom horses, phantom dogs that chase you, and even phantom headless cows. All of which appear out of nowhere only to disappear without a trace.

Lastly, there have also been bizarre reports of skeletons wearing armor, carrying swords. It is claimed that these beings will approach you to ask for directions.

Old House Woods might indeed be a peaceful place in the day time. Just watch out for the phantom headless cows.

Hoia-Baciu — , Transylvania, Romania

It is known as Romania’s Bermuda Triangle.

Plenty of strange occurrences are said to occur in these forests. Those who dare to wander the Hoia-Baciu forest claim to see shadowy figures passing in between trees, unexplained feelings nausea and the feeling of being watched. Some have even heard the sounds of giggles and screams coming through these woods.

One strange thing about this forest are the trees themselves and how they grow. The trees grow in a bizarre way, bending and twisting their limbs in an unnatural manner. The way they grow defies explanation.

There are also reports of UFO sightings. Could they be no more than a weather balloon? A drone, perhaps? Maybe.

Devil’s Tramping Ground — North Carolina

Not too far from a town called Siler City in North Carolina, there is a camping spot where a bare patch of dirty forms a perfect circle. Nothing ever grows there. Not grass. Not weeds. Nothing.

It is said that this bare circle of dirt was created because the Devil himself paces that very spot, walking in circles, conspiring all sorts of evil. He must do a lot of thinking.

Anyone that places something in the circle will find it gone or moved the next morning indicating a possible eerie supernatural element at play.

It is said that not even animals venture inside the circle.

Strange noise and glowing red eyes have also been reported in the vicinity of Devil’s Tramping Ground.

Scientists have tested the soil but could not explain why nothing grows there.

Wychwood Forest — Oxfordshire, UK

In these woods, there are tales of a phantom carriage driven by a headless horseman that appears out of nowhere. You can hear the hoofs of the horses beating against the ground, approaching closer and closer. And then nothing. The phantom carriage vanishing just as quickly as it appeared.

Other stories claim that the carriage carries crying children. Why they are crying is unknown.

These woods are also said to be haunted by the ghost of Amy Robsart who died mysteriously with suspicions in 1560. Her body was found at the bottom of the stairs. It is said that anyone who is unfortunate to see her spirit will surely meet their demise soon after.

Aokigahara Forest (Suicide Forest) — Japan

A peaceful and tranquil forest for nature lovers, it is also known by a far more sinister name — Suicide Forest.

The forest is extremely dense, protecting hikers from the elements.

As you might already guess, the forest got its name due to the suicides that happen there. It’s become such an issue that there are signs posted telling others that suicide is not the answer and that there is help.

Aokigahara Forest is patrolled on a regular basis to prevent and deter others if they’re considering the same.

Certain trails are also blocked off and forbidden.

Suicide Forest is also haunted by the Yurei, which are kind of like demons. They are extremely vengeful spirits.

Are these stories no more than an overactive imagination? Just the wind blowing through the trees? Maybe keep that reassuring thought in mind the next time you find yourself in one of these haunted forests.

Hmmm. Think I’ll pass.
