Kashmir: A Paradise on Earth
My Unforgettable Journey
“If there is a heaven on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here.” These famous words by Amir Khusro perfectly describe the mesmerizing beauty of Kashmir. The moment I set foot in this paradise, I was captivated by its snow-covered mountains, lush green valleys, and the warmth of its people.
Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar – The City of Ladke
Journey began in Srinagar, the heart of Kashmir. The first thing that caught my eye was the stunning Dal Lake, dotted with colorful Shikaras (wooden boats) and floating markets. I stayed in a charming houseboat, an experience straight out of a dream. As the sun set, the golden reflection on the lake created a magical scene.
Day 2: Exploring Gulmarg – Winter Wonderland
he next day, I traveled to Gulmarg, a dreamland for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Taking the Gondola ride, the world’s second-highest cable car, I reached Apharwat Peak, where fresh snow greeted me. I tried skiing for the first time, and though I stumbled a few times, the experience was unforgettable!
Day 3: Pahalgam – The Mini Switzerland of India
on my third day, I headed to Pahalgam, a place straight out of a fairy tale. The Lidder River flowed gracefully through the valley, creating a perfect melody of nature. I also visited Betaab Valley, where Bollywood movies come to life with their breathtaking backdrops. The untouched beauty and fresh mountain air were pure bliss.
Day 4: Sonmarg – The Meadow of Gold
A trip to Kashmir is incomplete without visiting Sonmarg, a valley of gold surrounded by glaciers. Riding a pony to Thajiwas Glacier felt like an adventure straight out of a fantasy novel. The sparkling white snow, majestic peaks, and the echo of silence made it one of the most surreal experiences of my life.
The Food, The Culture & The Warmth of People
Kashmir isn’t just about landscapes; it’s about its people and flavors. From the delicious Kahwa (traditional saffron tea) to the heavenly Rogan Josh, every bite was a treat. The hospitality of Kashmiris made my journey even more special, proving that the real beauty of Kashmir lies in its people.
Beyond the Tourist Spots: Hidden Gems of Kashmir
While Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg are the highlights of Kashmir, there are many hidden gems that truly showcase its untouched beauty.
One such place is Yusmarg, a peaceful meadow surrounded by pine forests and snow-capped peaks. Unlike the more popular destinations, Yusmarg remains uncrowded, making it a perfect retreat for those seeking solitude in nature. The Doodhpathri Valley, with its lush green pastures and crystal-clear streams, felt like stepping into a postcard. The name "Doodhpathri" means "Valley of Milk" due to the milky appearance of its river water as it flows over the white rocks.
For history lovers, Awantipora Ruins, an ancient temple complex built by King Avantivarman in the 9th century, offers a glimpse into Kashmir’s rich past. Walking through these ruins, I could almost hear the whispers of a time long gone.
The Unmatched Experience of a Kashmiri Homestay
While houseboats and hotels offer comfort, staying with a local Kashmiri family was the most heartwarming part of my journey. The warmth and hospitality I experienced were beyond words. Sitting by a traditional Bukhari (wooden stove) and sipping homemade Noon Chai (salted tea), I listened to stories of Kashmir’s culture, struggles, and beauty from the people who call this paradise home.
These moments reminded me that travel is not just about places; it’s about connections, experiences, and memories that stay with us forever.
