Jack and Lucky #6

What happens when Halloween takes a wrong turn...

By Michele WrightPublished 5 years ago 5 min read

Jack and his sister went Trick-or-treating every Halloween for as long as they could remember. Always dressed up, ready first thing to go out! Nothing beat this time of the year for either of them. This however would be their last time. Getting older and the pressures of teenage years getting all too real. So they planned to make it the best..LAST time!

Jack got out his "zombie doctor" costume, as his sister got to fixing her "zombie nurse". Everything was going right. Went to kiss their parents good bye, grabbed the bags and closed the door behind them. Little did they know..

Strolling along the sidewalk, talking to everyone they came in contact with. Typical Halloween night for kids right? Saw some friends, ran to them. Messed around and joked. All things kids should be up to on any holiday. Just making memories the best way they know how. Then it slowly came to an end. The friends started going home one by one. Jack and his sister smiled and slowly started heading back towards the siblings home.

Jack how ever saw an opportunity to grab some last minute candy. A house no one dared to go up to. The light wasn't even on, nor was it ever really. An older gentlemen lived there,...if he was even still alive. No one saw him enter or leave since he got home. He was away for a long time...rumors spread that he did some really messed up things.

Jack walked up to the door like it was nothing. His sister stayed behind and warned him he shouldn't. *Cant deny a boy candy on his last Halloween!* His thoughts I imagine, not mine.

Jack knocked, and after a moment, someone did indeed answer. Not a wo0rd was spoken, but the man reached out his hand with a single piece of candy. A bubble gum it looked like. Wrapped in a black plastic paper with a number six on it and nothing more. He dropped it into Jacks bag and quickly closed the door before he could even utter a thank you.

Jack quickly made his way back to his sister and thought nothing more of the weird exchange.

They both made it home, safe and sound! They changed, ate dinner with their parents, and looked through their spoils. So excited to share and switch for each others favorites. Jack saw the bubble gum candy he got last. With the single digit six on it. Unwrapped the mystery candy and examined it. Looked normal enough. So he put it in his mouth. *Chew Chew Chew*

Then it came time to go to bed for the kids. Jack and his sister went to their bedrooms and did just that. Jack was under his covers when he realized he still had his glasses on and gum in his mouth.

He through the gum on a piece of paper and put it on his nightstand along with his glasses. Shut his eyes...and began to dream.

*squish squish squish*

Jack started to nod awake a bit from the sound in his normal quiet room.

*squish Squish Squish*

Jack, more awake now, grabbed his glasses and put them on slowly. Gazing around the room. Realizing the sound was a lot closer, he looked on either side of his bed. Then he saw the piece of gum. It was on his pillow in the paper he had put it on.

Making a face, he grabbed it, annoyed at this point. Got out of bed and through it in the garbage can.

Back to sleep for Jack. Took off his glasses again and snuggled up under his blankets. Drifting off to sleep.

*squish squish squish*

Jacks eye flung open.

*squish squish squish*

He hid under his covers and reached for his glasses. Then tried for the light. He jumped upright looking towards the garbage can. Nothing was out of sorts though. He lay back confused. Of course started to drift off to sleep as a result. It was a long night after all.

*Chew chew chew*

Their was a sudden sensation in Jacks mouth. He jumped upright again in shock. The gum was in his mouth! Was this a dream? He was so sure he threw it out! Maybe just too much candy and spooky things...anything that could make sense really. A chewed up piece of discarded candy cant just show back up in your mouth suddenly right?...Right?

So Jack got up...being a horror movie fanatic he figured better safe then sorry. He got a small spoon and took the creepy gum out back. Dug a small hole in the ground and buried it.

Getting back into his bed he lay there and wondered. That old man was in prison for a long time...but what was it for again? He had heard so many different stories.

The guy was into bad magic. Into science and experiments. A mad man gone SERIOUSLY mad. He used to hang kids up by their toes and drain their blood...eww. Too many weird things to recollect.

He got blamed for five murders...that much Jack knew. He wished he could remember what really happened. He tried just to put it out of his mind and get back to sleep.

Suddenly Jack couldn't breathe. Something was blocking his airwaves. Something was very wrong! He opened his eyes, glasses on and could see everything clear as day. He knew the sensation in his mouth!

Looking at the floor he saw dirt and mud tracking all the way up to his bed, on his clothes...He knew what was happening. As he started to fade in and out of conciseness. Trying to tare the gum out of his mouth it started to scream. Each piece he ripped at he could see blood dripping from it.

Jack looked up to the mirror desperate to hold on to life. Behind him were five kids around his age. All in shirts...numbered one through five...

Behind him specially was the old man...smiling. The lights flashed and the kids disappeared. The old man was still there though...

Jack blacked out for a moment and fell to the floor. Gasping for air. He heard a voice in his head. A kids voice. Telling him he was sorry...and it would be easier if he just let go.

Jack looked up to the old man holding a shirt above his head smiling again.

The last words Jack would ever hear.
