Chapter 16

Natalie’s POV

I waited a while in the dark room, listening to see if Johnathan's uncle wasn't coming up the stairs. I knew Johnathan had told him to keep an eye on me. Biting my nails nervously, I looked at the window with the balcony. The doors were closed. I checked to find it unlocked.

I had to help Johnathan if I could. But how, I didn't know. I knew that I needed a wooden stake to kill Jacob. But I didn't know where to get one. I was wasting time just sitting here thinking about it. So, I looked around the room for at least something. The night stand near the bed caught my eye. I could use the leg of the table.

Checking the drawers of the table for something to break the legs, I found a hammer. Too easy, right? As I aimed in the spot where I wanted to break it, I swung and I heard it split. The table nearly fell over on top of me but I was able to stop it and clear the stuff off while putting some books I found in the drawers under the broken area.

I sighed in relief as I held the wooden stake in my hand. This was it, I was ready...I hope. Now to get off the balcony and land safely on the ground. I opened the doors and closed them behind me. Checking my surroundings for my escape route.

Down below I saw some bushes perfectly aligned. Those looked less painful enough to land on without breaking anything...hopefully. I studied my area before finally climbing over the edge and lowering myself so I would dangle feet first. I took in a deep breath and released and dropped into the bushes.

"Ouch!" I squeaked.

Rubbing my bum, I stood up and finding the stake, I made my way to the graveyard.

Johnathan's Pov

I stared Jacob down. I will not allow him to harm Natalie!

"Let's end this now," I said, letting the stake fall from the sleeve of my shirt.

Jacob smirked. "I have waited a long time for this moment, boy. After I'm done with you, your little friend is next."

That did it. That brought out my anger. No one threatens the ones I love.

Natalie’s Pov

My heart was racing as I drew closer to the destination. I hope I wasn’t too late. As I came to the entrance I heard talking. One person sounded like Jacob. The other, Johnathan.

"I have waited a long time for this moment, boy. After I'm done with you, your little friend is next." I hear Jacob's cold words echo through my head.

My eyes grew wide as I found a hiding place behind a large tombstone. I held the stake close to my chest. My breathing is heavy and my heart racing. I hope no one knew I was here.

I heard more talking. This time it was Johnathan.

"You leave Natalie out of this!" Johnathan yelled as a hiss escaped his lips.

I peeked around the corner of the tombstone and witnessed a battle I never dreamt I would witness. Two vampires fighting to the death, teeth bearing out and claws from their fingernails sharp. Every once in a while, I would get a glimpse of Johnathan's face. His eyes were blood red, his fangs long and sharp.

My eyes grew wide again at this site before me. I didn't know if I was terrified or fascinated by this sudden change. I kept telling myself he's fighting for me. While fighting for his father's death as well.

My heart melted at the thought and I closed my eyes for a second. My thoughts running as fast as my heart was beating. He was fighting for me, I said to myself. For me.

I was pulled out of my imagination with a start. The sound of someone in horrible pain and agony rang through the night. I felt chills run up my spine as I heard an evil laugh escape from Jacob's lips, near my ear.

"Hello, Natalie," he whispered, sending chills around my entire body.

Does this mean Johnathan... Lost?

I mustered up enough courage to look around the tombstone at Johnathan's still body. I felt tears swelling up in my eyes as they started rolling down my cheeks in fear. This was happening. I was going to die right here. All hope is lost now.

"There, there," Jacob cooed in my ear as he brushed a strand of hair away from my tear stained face. "I'll make your death quick and painless."

No. I didn't want to die like this! But I couldn't move to protect myself. I was scared. Johnathan collapsed. He was gone. I closed my eyes and his smirking face popped up. This made me cry even more. I wouldn't see that smirking face again.

"Please... Don't... Kill me," I said between tears. "Please, I don't want to die! Please! Johnathan!"

Jacob suddenly laughed loudly which made me jump from my discovered hiding spot. I stumbled over to Johnathan, who lay still on the ground.

"Johnathan," I whimpered. "Please, come back to me. You promised..."

"Promises are for the weak," Jacob sneered. "Did you think he was strong enough to defeat me? He hasn’t been a vampire long, young one. I've been a vampire before his birth. He is weak."

Jacob let out a bellowing evil laugh as I sat there near Johnathan's still body. My entire body was shaking by now. Tears continuously escaped my eyes.

As Jacob's laugh subsided, I suddenly widened my eyes as a shadowy figure from behind a tombstone drew closer.

Jacob's fits of laughter stopped as he was hit in the head from behind. His fangs came out and his eyes turned red as he hissed and slowly turned to the source of the impacted. I was surprised to see Johnathan's uncle standing there, his fangs also showing.

"I would suggest that you leave, Jacob," Johnathan's uncle snarled.

I quickly looked away and laid across Johnathan's chest. I was so scared. I almost died. I was about to die right there. And Johnathan couldn’t do anything. I lifted to look at his face. He looked so peaceful. A tear rolled down my cheek and the sounds of his uncle and Jacob's battle took place behind me.

"Natalie! Get out of here!" His uncle yelled before Jacob slammed into him.

I didn’t want to leave Johnathan's side, and I didn't want to stay in the battle field of two powerful beings either. So, I stood up shakenly and ran towards the graveyard gate. Breathing heavily and heart racing so fast I could hear it. I just kept running. Running till I was inside Johnathan's house. Locking the doors and running to the parlor and curling up in a corner.

No words could describe every feeling that I was feeling at that moment. Fear, panic, exhaustion. I closed my eyes tightly, trying to get rid of the horrible sight I saw tonight. I should've listened. I should’ve stayed here... But if I didn't, Jacob wouldn’t have had a distraction. He would've killed Johnathan instantly!

I hugged my legs as I started to quietly sob. I was so scared. So. Scared.
