Today began just like any other day, my alarm went off at 7am I showered, brushed me teeth threw on my clothes with just enough time to spare to tell my mother good morning, steal my brothers bacon off his plate and run out the door to catch my bus. The bus ride wasn’t unusual I sat alone in the back, which is what I’ve always preferred I watched everyone laugh and joke and thought to myself ; what is everyone so happy about. I look down at my tattered clothes and my cheap sneakers and I wondered for a moment what it would be like to have such nice, new things. To be “ popular” but I let the thought pass as quickly as it came I just wasn’t like the other kids in my school and well I was perfectly happy being alone most of the time anyway. Besides I did have something none of the other girls had, my most prized possession, a beautiful gold heart shaped locket that my father gave me when I was just a young girl, inside a picture of the two of us. Whenever I felt alone I’d look inside and imagine what fun we’d have when I get to go see him in California this summer. Little did I know then. This was definitely not going to be like any other day. I get to my first period class without a minute to spare and mrs. Stewart is beginning with a recap of the weeks lesson in the ongoing war in Syria with one catch, pop quiz this morning. I’ve never been that good at tests I always get to anxious. I can already feel my palms begin to sweat. I excuse myself to go to the bathroom to try to calm my nerves. As I enter the restroom I’m relieved to find I’m alone. I turn on the faucet and begin to splash the cool water on my skin.

I’m there for what only feels like a few minutes before I hear students running and screaming through the halls just outside the bathroom door. I’m frozen in fear, suddenly someone is trying to get into the bathroom I gripped the handle tightly and used all my strength to hold the door closed. It felt like the screams would never end. My knuckles had turned white from gripping the door handle for so long. The sound of my heart racing began to calm and I realized I no longer heard screams, actually I heard nothing at all. The school was completely silent. I work up my nerve to open the door and to my horror they were all dead. There was blood everywhere I searched for anyone living to try to find out what had happened back in my homeroom the same scene. I find Mrs. Stewart beneath her desk with a wound to her throat. Suddenly her eyes open she stares at me for a moment in confusion and terror she says only one thing . RUN! I didn’t hesitate to take her advice, I ran as fast as I could towards the front doors I push threw them with all my might all I could think of was getting somewhere safe I need to get home. I get outside only to find all the cars stopped on the roadway people are strewn everywhere I could see. I dare not stop until I get to my mother. I can see my house and i grow more and more afraid of what I’ll find with each step. I open my door and like everywhere else everything in silent. I call out for my mother and brother I go room to room, nothing. The house is empty. Or so I though.

I look for any clue where they could be, I sit on the end of my bed and trying to decide what to do next. I decide to go look for them. I pack a few things in my book bag , water, some canned foods I try to get enough for the three of us, all I can think is that when I find them we must leave Oregon, We have to find Dad. As I begin to zip my bag I hear someone coming down the hall I look around the corner it is not my mother. This is some sort of creature with rubber looking skin covered in a slick slim long thin fingers with lethal talons and large black empty eyes void of anything. Mrs. Stewart’s words ring in my head RUN. The creature chases me through the house I run to the bathroom locking the door behind me and frantically try to pull myself through the small window above the shower. The creature gets ahold of my foot just as I pull my leg through the window, I look back just long enough to see that it can’t fit though the window to give chase. I run quickly toward the woods there was a tool shed near the lake that we used to swim in for sure there I can find some kind of weapons and most importantly Hide.

I get to the shed and barracade the door while I try to gather my thoughts. I don’t know where to look for mom but I do know how to get to dad I have to leave Oregon now, I’ll get to dad and tell him what’s happened we will return to find mom and Jacob dad will know what to do. After all I’m only 13 years old I’m all alone if I don’t find help I don’t think I’ll survive.

I find what I need and keep it close it’ll be getting dark soon and those things will be hard to see. I’ll try to sleep if I can and set out on the daylight. I’ve only drivin in a parking lot a few times but to get to California first task tomorrow, find a car.

Day 2

I wake up screaming in a sweat, my heart is racing and I can’t escape the ever growing urge to RUN! I couldn’t have been asleep very long before I heard the sound something rustling in the leaves and hard breathing coming from right behind me. I can feel my body trembling, In a panic and without question I grab my the small pink backpack In one hand and the axe laying closely beside me and swiftly I jump to my feet slam open the shed door and begin to run. I take off through the woods I don’t dare to slow down all I see around me is the outlines of the forest trees stretched out as far as I can see, but as I listen to the dried leaves cracking beneath my feet one thing is very certain; I'm not alone.

Suddenly I hear it, not a creature but a girl. “Sarah please wait!!!” It hits me like a wall And stops right in my tracks, tears immediately stream down my cheeks, Mom? I fall to my knees as she catches up to hold me sobbing. She explained she’s hidden my brother in a storm shelter that she’s been searching for me since the attack we must get back to the shelter in the day light and she agrees first thing we are leaving for California.

We arrived at the storm shelter early to find Jacob hingry and afraid. I grab food and water from my bag we eat in silence and for the first time I have a moment to process everything I’ve seen, mom explains she hasn’t seen any survivors yet but she’s sure we’re not alone. We don’t know where the creatures came from or what is going on but one things for sure We don’t have supplies to last here it’s time to go. We only make it a few miles before seen. We desperately run toward the car praying for there to be keys. As I reach the door I hear my mother scream. I turn back to see the creature has them and is tearing at their flesh blood is spilling from their wounds my mom is still trying to shield my brother Jacob but I can see there is no hope. I run toward the creature with my axe and begin to chop at its hands as I screams and lets them go just moments before I feel the searing pain of teeth ripping through my throat and claws around my chest. My final thought “ I’ve got to get to California, to tell them there are no survivors left”.
