There was only one rule: don't open the door. That's what the doll with swirls on its cheeks said. But I had had enough. I wasn't dying in a cliche. While three pairs of eyes that were familiar to my own were wide with fear. I strode across the room, boiling over with anger, and grabbed the little doll.

"Hey, what are you doing." The speaker in the doll's mouth croaked.

"I want to play a game," I mocked, looking into the cameras behind the doll's eyes.

"No, I want to play a game. Micheal, you have lived a life prospering off the suffering of others. In this room with you are the only people you have cared about in your selfish existence. Attached to their necks are death masks. Each one is set with a timer. You must decide to keep living for yourself or" I threw the doll on the ground and put my foot on its head "Stop-"

"Na, that's not how this works. You see, I'ma break this doll's head if you don't take them death masks off and open the door."

"Okay, okay. Just don't hurt my dolly." The unclinking of locks sounded, and the masks fell to the floor.

"Now open the door." The door opened. Picking the doll up, I spoke again. "Alright, I'ma keep your little doll until me and mine is safe. Then I'll mail its little ass back to this dump."

"Please don't take my dolly."

"Hey, when I'm safe, you'll get your dolly back. But you try anything in the future, and dolly gonna pay, you feel me."

"Yes, yes, I feel you. Anything. Just give my dolly back."

"Yeah, yeah," I said, tucking the doll under my arm and following my family out of the room.

This is a fantastic subversion of the horror trope, filled with tension and a satisfyingly defiant twist. "'I want to play a game,' I mocked, looking into the cameras behind the doll's eyes." -- That line is pure, chilling badassery. The protagonist's quick thinking and bold action make this a truly empowering and entertaining read. :)
