There was only one rule: don’t open the door.

Emma stared anxiously as the knocking grew louder, more impatient. Rosie tugged at her shirt with worry. Taking her sister’s hand, she led them to the kitchen and opened the pantry door.

‘Need Mumma,’ whimpered Rosie as she hurried inside.

‘Mumma's not here. You know the rules. We mustn’t open the door,’ she informed her, annoyed. The knocking grew urgent.

‘Rosie hot.'

Emma watched her sister raise her arms, expectantly. Rolling her eyes, she hurriedly pulled the jumper up over her head. Rosie smiled with relief. Glancing nervously at the door, Emma watched as the handle jiggled.

‘Stay here,’ she demanded, passing her the tablet. ‘Watch your shows and stay quiet. What’s the rule?’

‘No open door,’ said Rosie, placing on her headphones, her big eyes wide with fear. Emma nodded, stifling a cough. Taking one last look at her sister, she closed the door with a soft click.

Cautiously, she walked towards the door, her heart pounding. The knocking had become deafening; heavy banging resonated throughout the house.

She sat on the bottom stair, watching the silhouettes through the glass. The door shook violently.

Her stomach churned as she gripped the railing with clammy hands. Pulling her knees close, she wiped the sweat from her brow.

With a crunch, the door barrelled inwards.

Emma screamed.

Their masks were enormous. She trembled as heavy boots thundered inside.

The carpet disappeared beneath her as gloved hands quickly lifted her into the air. She gasped, thrown roughly over a shoulder. The cold air caressed her face as she was rushed outside. People screamed at the sight of her.

Emma squinted against the swirling bright lights.

‘Is there anyone else in the house?’

‘No,’ she lied, smiling wickedly toward the fire engine.
