Being a police officer, I see all kinds of strange and eerie events, especially during the night. You know that old saying about the full moon and how it alters people's behavior, let me tell you...It's true. I never believed it, until I started paying attention.

I have witnessed it firsthand, and I believe that just about anyone who works the late shifts has seen it too. It's a common joke at work, "You're working the full moon." Nobody wants to do it, because we've all seen it.

More babies are born during a full moon. There are also more medical emergencies. I have good friends who are EMT's and they can tell some stories. The effects of certain drugs seem to have enhanced effects, and there are certainly more deaths, violence, and just madness. I can't explain the exact science behind it, but I know that it's a real thing.

Is it the gravitational pull?

Or something a bit more haunting?

One night while working the night shift, I was called to a residence where the wife called 911 and claimed that her husband was acting very weird and was scaring her.

I pulled up to the given address, not sure what I was getting ready to walk into. The house was quiet, well-kept, and located in a neighborhood that wasn't known to have much drama and crime.

I approached the door, listening for any clues coming from within the house, but there was nothing, just eerie silence. I knocked and gave my usual introduction, "Police Department." Nobody answered.

Dispatch had already informed me that the caller was an elderly woman, and knowing this added another level of concern. I pulled out my flashlight and began walking around the house, peeking into the windows. Nothing. It was as if nobody was at home, yet less than five minutes ago, a call came from within.

Suddenly, I was overcome by a feeling that I had never had before, a feeling that still today I can only describe as complete fear. My hands were shaking as I called for backup, but it would take them more time than I had to make the drive. I had to get into that house.

I went back to the front door and knocked again, this time stronger and louder. "POLICE DEPARTMENT!" I yelled. I could hear slow footsteps. "OPEN THE DOOR NOW!" I shouted. Still trying to look over my shoulder, uncertain about my surroundings, and still shaking from the mysterious anxiety that had taken over.

Finally, the door began to slowly open, and a frail little woman poked her head out. "Did you call 911 ma'am?" I questioned her. She nodded.

"Can I come inside?" I asked again.

She slowly opened the door; the fear in her eyes was obvious.

"He's over there in the corner, he's been there for a long time talking to the demons." She pointed with her hand shaking uncontrollably.

I quickly led her into the kitchen and asked her to take a seat and stay put. I noticed that she was following behind me closing the curtains on every window that we walked past.

"Ma'am please sit down. I have to make sure you're safe before I can go talk to your husband."

"I have to close the curtains, she whispered. They're standing outside watching us."

I reached for my radio once again. "Can you step on it? I don't like this."

I eased toward the elderly man, rocking back and forth in the corner, mumbling words that made absolutely no sense.

"Sir, are you okay?" "

"Sir, can you turn around and talk to me for a minute?"

I almost jumped backward when he stood up and turned around. "They're here, look at all of them." He pointed toward a window.

"Who's here?"

"There's nobody out there."

Finally, my backup arrived: he stood in the doorway listening and looking around nervously. "Are you taking any new medications sir?" I heard him ask.

"Just my blood pressure and water pills." He answered.

My partner walked outside, and I could hear him calling for an ambulance, because of course, something had to be very wrong. But what didn't make sense was how both the husband and wife were both hallucinating. (the exact same scenario)

"Have ya'll been out somewhere tonight?"

"Has anyone come to visit?"

By now we're thinking that (somehow) they had taken something that was causing them both to believe demons were outside, looking in. Had someone purposely given these two elderly people something? Something that caused them both to share the exact same hallucination?

The old man laughed, once again pointing to the window.

"They won't let anyone in or out."

I looked toward the window, and my partner stepped outside to look around the yard again.

"Sir, there's nobody out there. Look at me, I was able to come inside just fine, and my partner was able to walk outside. There's nobody out there."

"It's that damned full moon." He shouted, getting more agitated.

The ambulance arrived.

They began inspecting the couple.

No signs of drugs.

Blood Pressure and all vitals were good.

"What do you think?" I whispered to the EMT.

"I have absolutely no idea." He admitted with a bewildered look in his eyes.

They decided to take them both to the hospital for a proper evaluation.

At the local hospital, the story continued. They each explained to the medical staff how the demons were surrounding their house, looking through the windows.

After in-depth evaluations and even talking to the on-duty mental health professional, it was decided that there was nothing wrong with either of them, and they were returned home with follow-up appointments.

A few days later, I decided to make a welfare check. The lady quickly opened the door with a smile as bright as the sun. Her husband was sitting in his chair, flipping through a newspaper.

Neither of them had any recollection of what had happened. They didn't even remember me being there just a few nights ago, or going to the hospital in an ambulance.

For months afterward, during every full moon, it was a certainty that we would receive a call from the same house, at the same time, and the demons were there looking through the windows once again.

After so many visits, I began walking around the house with the lady, carefully closing all of the curtains so that the demons couldn't see inside.

As someone who likes to think that I've seen just about everything. This is the one story that still haunts me.

What was causing this?

Why did it only happen during a full moon?

Does the full moon have a haunting magic that causes people to do strange things, to act in bizarre ways?

Or is it all just an unexplainable coincidence?
