There was only one rule: ‘don't open the door’ A warning of sort, almost like a restraint... but not to keep us out, to keep ‘IT’ in.
It started on the eve of Halloween. Something was different about that day, I couldn’t put my finger on it. Not sure if it was the darkness of the day sky, the way the maple leaves rustled and danced in a spiral or the bone-chilling impending doom causing the hairs on the back of my neck to rise. Either way, I sensed ‘ITS’ return.
Dad accepted a job in this quiet town, and he moved us here. Dad was raving about this new house for weeks! But there was nothing new about this house, in fact, it had been vacant for a century!
Erik, my little brother, was indifferent about moving, but I was leaving someone behind: she had a smile that made year ten worth it.
The house was huge, we’d never lived in a house this size before. It was Halloween eve, “Boys, dad and I are going out, we will be back in the morning.” I hated how quiet it was, I couldn't go on my chats because there had never been internet cables installed before... gave me creeps.
At midnight, Erik and I were on the sofa watching a movie when the lights started flickering... until there was complete darkness. My heart was pounding as I ignored Erik nervously calling “Jamie!” “shooo” I said to Erik, as I squinted in the dark. Just then, a light appeared, which seemed to be coming from the corridor.
“Come on” I said to Erik, and we slowly approached the light. We cautiously peaked around the corner into the corridor. Then we saw it, the light at the top of a black wooden door. This door seemed out of place and appeared to look centuries old. “Jamie, that door, it it wasn't there before” Erik whispered in a stammer. I looked at Erik, panicked, noting the fear on his face.
Nearing door, all I could hear was a faint ‘thump thump’, coming from deep behind it. “Look” Erik says. There we saw ‘DON’T OPEN’ carved into a panel. Tensions rose as we stared at the door, neither of us knew what to do next. Just then a loud ‘THUMP’ jolted us into motion as we ran away from the door.
Lights came back on shortly after and we didn't mention anything to our parents. The weirdest part is that, after Halloween, the door mysteriously vanished. It wasn’t until summer that Erik and I discovered what ‘IT’ was, but we have until Halloween to worry about that!
