Gorp

Gorp was hungry. He hoped the lady would come back and bring him more food. Gorp’s head felt fuzzy, and he had trouble remembering. He remembered he liked the lady. She would bring him food and show him photos of the old Gorp. Gorp liked that. “Gooooorp!” Gorp moaned involuntarily, and a large amount of drool rolled down the side of his mouth and onto his stained and dirty shirt. Gorp shuffled slowly round the basement. Gorp could smell dried blood on his shirt, and it always made him hungry. He began to chew a little on his sleeve. Gorp liked to chew things. That was how he had gotten free of his rope. Foooood… Hungry! Gorp felt an uncontrollable hunger these days. Old Gorp was not like that. The lady had shown him her shiny thing, her “heart shaped locket”. Old Gorp was there. He did not look hungry like new Gorp. “Gooorp” Gorp moaned again (he did that a lot) and shuffled back and forth in his basement. Gorp didn’t like the basement. It was dark and there were lots of things for Gorp to bump into. And worst of all. There was no food. Gorp wished the lady would come back.

Gorp shuffled in a repetitive pattern. Back and forth. Back and forth. His mind couldn’t quite keep hold of his thoughts, but occasionally Gorp would remember Old Gorp. He remembered one time that Old Gorp and the lady were walking outside. There were trees and sunshine, lots of different Gorps. Lots of different food. Gorp smiled a large open-mouthed grin and more drool dripped down onto his shirt. “Gorp Gorp!” he chortled. He coughed now and more dribble spattered up onto his chin and chest. Something was hurting Gorp’s throat, and he didn’t like it. The lady was nice. The lady fed Gorp. The lady would make the hurt go away. The lady told Gorp all about the Old Gorp although he didn’t quite understand. Gorp didn’t like Old Gorp. He was jealous. He wanted the lady to only feed Gorp. Sometimes the lady told him stories, although Gorp didn’t really listen to the lady. She smelled like food and that was all Gorp really wanted. She carried a shiny thing on her finger. Gorp liked that too. Gorp liked shiny things. “The disease was quick,” she said, “no one saw it coming…soon they turned”

“Goooorp!!!” he would smile and drool in her direction and shuffle a little back and forth on his rope. The lady would smile back and throw him some food. Gorp liked the lady.

“Gorp Gorp” he snorted angrily. Gorp was very hungry now and his throat hurt. Something was in his throat, and it was painful. “Gorp” he moaned again. Gorp decided to shuffle around some more to see if his pain would go away. His mind hurt and he was forgetting things again. Then he spotted something shiny on the floor. “Gorp.” he yelped and shuffled meaningfully towards the object that had caught his attention. It was under a Gorp’s stool in the corner, by Gorp’s chewed rope. It was very shiny. Gorp liked shiny things. Gorp’s limbs were stiff. He leaned forward twice but couldn’t bend himself to pick things up. So, Gorp threw himself to the ground. He heard a crack as his face and arm hit the concrete with force. “Goooorp!” he groaned in pain and excitement. He was close to the shiny thing. Gorp liked shiny things. Gorp dragged himself along the floor by one arm, his drool creating a puddle before him as he went. He reached his stool and simply swatted it away. Here it was, the shiny thing. “Gorp! Gorp!” Gorp squeaked excitedly before he was stopped suddenly by the pain in his throat. He reached down with his fingers, two of which had been chewed to the knuckle and touched it. He ran one of his still intact digits over the object and slowly smiled as the mist in his mind began to clear for a moment. It was the lady’s locket. Gorp picked it up to look. There was the picture of Old Gorp…and there was the lady! “Gorp Gorp!” Gorp yelled joyously to himself in the basement, the sound echoing off the walls. The lady always bought the locket and the pictures of old Gorp. She must be close. With Food!! Gorp shuffled himself back and forth until he was back to his feet. He looked around. Where was the lady? He moaned again, “Goooorp”. His throat still hurt. The pain was still there. He coughed and this time a little blood and vomit came up. That made Gorp feel a little better. Gorp looked at the picture of Old Gorp in the locket. Old Gorp didn’t look like a Gorp. Before Gorp came to basement he had seen other Gorps. They were like him, they wanted food. But the lady wouldn’t give it to them. Instead, she smashed them up with a… “hammer” she called it. Sometimes when she wasn’t looking, Gorp would sneak in and eat some of the other Gorps. They were tasty. He liked the lady. She always gave Gorp food.

“Goooorp” Gorp cried and vomited again. This time the pain instantly disappeared as a large puddle of vomit appeared on the floor in front of him. Gorp felt better. “Gorp Gorp!” he groaned; fresh drool mixed with mucus dripping down his chin. But now Gorp was hungry again. He wished the lady would come back. Then, another shiny thing caught his eye. Wow. How exciting! Lots of shiny things for Gorp today. Once more Gorp threw himself down and crawled towards his own stinking pile of vomit and blood. And there it was! Gorp knew what it was. Despite the mist in his mind, he remembered. It was a finger. Tasty. First, he must get the shiny thing. Gorp reached for the finger and stopped. Gorp was confused. The shiny thing belonged to the lady. He remembered it and for a moment he was very proud of himself. “Gorp!” he exclaimed. But how could the shiny thing be here? This was the lady’s shiny thing and it sat on her finger. Gorp looked down at the photo of Old Gorp, and then at the photo of the lady. There it was the shiny thing was on her finger. And Gorp, for the briefest second suddenly remembered. And Gorp felt bad. Very, very bad. But then, the feeling was gone. Gorp reached for the finger and took off the shiny thing. “Gorp!” he said and grinned looking at the shiny thing, before he tossed the finger back into his wide-open maw. Food!! Gorp loved food. Gorp looked around. He was still very hungry. He hoped the lady would come back and bring him some food.
