Germaine Street - Chapter Four

A Sequential Novel

By Nick RowleyPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Like their parents and older sister, Randolph, Connor and Shawn Rirsen had noticed the new neighbors. Unlike Kitty, Tobias and Lizzie, the triplets were 14 and had been especially observant of the fact that the new neighbors were mostly comprised of girls.

Oh sure there was a kid who seemed to be around eight like Abby but the rest were girls, wonderful, wonderful girls! Seven girls that surely would be impressed by the suaveness that only the overconfidence of a 14 year old surfing a tsunami of hormones can muster.

So naturally as they lay in bed that night, their conversation was as single minded as one might expect, and just as enlightened as well.

“I liked the one with the glasses” Randolph stated with an air of great importance.

“Really?” Connor was pacing the room mulling over his answer to the most important question of the evening, “you don’t think her bad eyesight is a problem?”

“Nah,” Randolph shook his head, “it’s cute. Anyway who did you like?”

“I mean, all of them, even foureyes, but, if I had to pick, I’d say ginger”

“Ginger?! Why?!”

“What do you mean ‘Why?!’? She’s tall, she looks like she can run, what’s not to like?”

“Oh would you both shut up and go to sleep” Shawn’s voice came from beneath his covers, muffled by the fabric and husked by tiredness and annoyance.

“Oooh listen to Shawn, he’s sooo sleepy” Randolph mocked his marginally older brother, “come on, I know you liked one of them, we all liked at least one”

“I did” admitted Shawn “but it is far too late to talk about this now”

“No it’s not” Connor sat down on the edge of Shawn’s bed “look, Rand likes, god knows why but Rand likes glasses, I like ginger and you like…”

Shawn sat up, “if I tell you, will you let me sleep?”

“Course bro” Connor made a vague cross over his heart.

“Oh yeah, totally” Randolph chimed in “go on, who do you like?”

“Ugh,” Shawn knew this was likely to not be the end of the discussion, “so, you saw the twins?”

“Yeah?” Conner leaned closer, he’d definitely seen the twins, it was hard to miss an identifier duo of girls of roughly their older sister’s age “which one?”

Shawn met his brother's gaze with a puzzled head tilt “what do you mean ‘which one?’? Them, both of them”

“Ooooh” Randolph and Connor responded in unison, “The Twins”

Shawn sighed “yeah, The Twins; they look like they would be fun to talk to. Plus they’re older, I like the idea of that. Now,” he lay down and drew the covers back over his head, “time to go to sleep”.

In the dark Connor’s voice was far clearer, “How bout we have a little game?”

“What sort of game?” Rand was always keen to follow where his middle doppelgänger’s thoughts led. As the marginally youngest of the three he generally fell into following Connor’s lead.

“We each have a favourite, maybe we could see who can get somewhere with her” although unseen Connor’s face had clearly turned toward Shawn “or them.”

“What, like, first one to get a kiss?” Rand sounded just a little bit too excited by this game.

Connor looked over to the youngest member of their triad “A kiss is good, love nips are better, and they leave a mark…”

“Oh yeeeeah” Rand was definitely already picturing the potential of this game “you’re on”

“K, k, Shawn, you on board for this?”

But no response came from their oldest brother, save for the snoring.

“Ah, majority rules” declared Connor, “we’ll tell him in the morning.”
