Faerie Ball
Spooky Micro Fiction

There was only one rule: don’t open the door. It was strange that the forbidden door had a mirror inset into it. Weird… Still, the sumptuous bedroom in a gorgeous castle in which it was set was worth the admonition not to open one stupid door.
Mykayla had been shocked when she was picked this year. Every year the most beautiful girls from every village were picked to come to the Fae King’s castle for the Midwinter feast. There they were feted, wined, dined. There were balls, athletic contests, singers, dancers. It was, well, absolutely wonderful.
Mykayla was a shy girl. Despite the way the boys looked at her, she never believed in her own worth. But, this proved she was wrong. Screw her mother’s constant insults. She was worthy enough, maybe, to marry a noble… a prince? She would have her own castle full of servants who would bow, scrape, and jump to every desire.
Scotching her chair to the mirrored door, Mykayla preened. After brushing her lustrous hair, 100 strokes exactly, she stood and looked at her reflection. The pink ball gown with puffy sleeves and plummeting neckline was gorgeous…, as she was in it.
What is with this door? Why would there be a mirror in it? Was it a window? A portal to another realm? One of beauty, romance, and happiness? What could it hurt? Looking over her shoulder, Mykayla reached for the knob. No! Don’t ruin it. Only one silly rule. Still… Without conscious thought, she turned the knob. The door opened.
Inside there was … just a room. Nothing special. A bed, fireplace, chamber pot. She stepped in. The door swung shut behind her. Whirling, she looked through the two way mirror at … herself. The other her smiled. “Being you will be fun. Bye now.”

Oh this was good Andrew!! Very clever twist indeed!! (Apologies it took me so long to get here!!)
I like where you took this challenge, a sweet horror for all ages.
Love the fairytale setting and vibe. Felt Cinderella-ish. And the twist at the end was literal. Cool entry!!!
If only she had listened, lol. Loved your story!
