Don't Go to Sleep

The Shadows are Waiting

Don't go to sleep. You've been taught many things: that it's necessary, that it's natural, and most especially, that it's safe. These are all untrue. Sleep is something which is a holdover from our animal ancestors, and modern humans should be able to function without. For our entire existence though, we have continued to sleep as though it still is something we need for our survival. Little do we know that all we do when we sleep is make ourselves more vulnerable.

Our enemies want us to sleep so that they have easier access to us, so they lull us into this sense of security so that we spend our nights hopelessly unaware that they are preying on us. If you have ever seen a shadow out of the corner of your eye during the night, then you have seen them. And regardless of if you have ever seen them, they have seen you. If you have ever slept, they have been in your room, preying on you. They cannot be stopped unless you spend every minute awake; they cannot be destroyed, though many have tried.

Are there times when you awaken more tired than you were before going to sleep? Do you feel groggy no matter how long you sleep? That's a sign that they have gotten to you, and a sign that it is far too late to do anything about it.

First you will be constantly tired; you will never get enough sleep. No matter what you do, you will not be able to feel well-rested. Sleeping more, sleeping less, sleep aids, staying awake - none of it will help you feel any better than you did before you laid down in your bed.

Next you will develop a sort of insomnia which prevents you from being comfortable but not from sleeping. What this will mainly do is exacerbate the problems which you have already been experiencing. You will still be able to sleep, but you will go from not having good rest to not even being aware that you had slept at all.

Finally, you will endure episodes of sleep paralysis. This is the final stage of their preying upon you. You will experience visions as you lay in your bed, and will most likely attribute them to hallucinations or nightmares, but they are not. They are their true forms, come to finish their business with you. Once you have seen them fully, your time has gone from limited to short.

The forms will encircle you, growing closer and closer with each passing night. By this point, nothing will be able to help you, even refusing to sleep. Once you have seen them, it is too late. Your knowledge of their existence is a fundamental threat to your life. Already, they suck your life force, and once you have seen even their shadows it grows worse. Once you see their physical form, to them you are no longer perceived as only a source of food, but also as a threat, and they will act accordingly.

As they draw closer, your fatigue will worsen. With each night, you will find yourself more tired and more incapable of even the most basic tasks until it reaches the point where it is all you can do to even drag yourself out of bed and work through each day only to be greeted by the same visions every nightfall. Before long, you will no longer be able to subconsciously fight them off, and your life will come to an end.

And now, it is time for me to go to sleep.

Alright Joseph... So much for sleeping now.... I think it's well written, and relatable, to most people who have a hard time sleeping. You hooked me with the vulnerable, that was a nice touch.
