The Basement

There was only one rule: don’t open the door.

Molly didn’t care much for rules, and this one was all too intriguing. Mostly because it only applied when her mother was out of town.

Her father was pretty laid back about most things, but during the time his wife was away, he would change most dramatically, especially about the basement. He’d even gone to the lengths of putting a lock on it, not that her mother had noticed.

But this particular Saturday, he’d forgotten to lock the door as he’d emerged from the depths of the house.

‘I need to pop out,’ he muttered. Molly nodded, pretending not to notice his dirty shirt or ruffled hair as she flicked through her phone.

She waited until she heard the engine. Gripping the handle excitedly, she listened as his car pulled away.

Opening the door, she looked down into darkness. Anticipation tickled her as she descended, each stair groaning under her weight.

Finally, her bare feet touched the cold floor. The anticipation was killing her. She walked blindly forward, with outstretched arms, searching for the light switch.

Something moved.

She froze. The hair on the back of her neck prickled. She looked into the darkness with wide eyes.

Something groaned.

Panicked, she shuffled backwards, standing in something wet and warm.

Her heart raced as she fumbled for her phone, lighting up the floor. She was standing in a pool of blood. Holding her breath to keep from screaming, she slowly angled the light across the basement floor, following the blood trail, illuminating a badly bruised chained ankle. The foot moved slightly, filling Molly with terror.

Above her, the basement door slammed shut. Molly jumped, dropping her phone. It cracked and bounced as the light went out, plunging her into complete darkness.
