Crowing Dawn

When the Sun Rose

By Desirae AnayaPublished about a year ago 1 min read

There was only one rule: don’t open the door. Jeremy, Kayla, Royce, and I all looked at each other with concern.

"Of course, Mrs. Swell. We won't open it." I said. Mrs. Swell was satisfied with my answer and finished her tour of the old church. I looked at Jeremy and Royce and urged them to continue filming.

"Mrs. Swell may I ask why we can't open the door? It seems that would limit our paranormal investigation. Since we are the first ones to investigate St. Agnes Parish we wouldn't be doing it justice if we are limited." Although Kayla's British accent sounded disarming Mrs. Swell spun on her heels with fury on her face.

"YOU WILL NOT OPEN THAT DOOR." I interjected quickly.

"We won't Mrs. Swell, I promise." I elbowed Kayla.

"We are grateful for this opportunity." Mrs. Swell nodded satisfied. Finally, Mrs. Swell locked us in the church, promising to release us in the morning. We made our way to the destroyed alter and began to plan our investigation.

"You know we have to see what's behind that door." Jeremy said.

"Obviously. That could be the whole episode! We could finally become viral!" Royce and Kayla nodded in agreement. "Excellent, let's go." We made our way to the forbidden door.

"Look! It doesn't have a door knob!"

"I can fix that." Royce backed up and threw all his weight at the door. It broke easily. When it was knocked down there was a violent scream that filled the church. Royce rose from the ground, blood dripping from his eyes, nose, and mouth. A voice erupted from him that was not his.

"You shouldn't have opened that door." The next morning Mrs. Swell opened the door and beheld four corpses, all bleeding from the eyes, mouth, and nose.

I enjoyed the intensity of the opening and the creation of the situation- Using the names made it very personal and pulled me right in!
