It was some time near midnight. Maybe 11:54 pm when the night began to feel chillier than usual. I usually like it when it was a bit cooler as I slept at night, but this was a different kind of cold. I bundled underneath the blanket to keep myself warm and protected from the cold air that blew against the blanket and I. When it grew too much after trying several times to keep my body warm, I found myself crawling out of bed groggily and walking towards the thermostat with a stumble. I rubbed the 6-hour crust from my eyes to read the machine before me in it low lighting. It read 64 degrees. Strange, I tell myself as I have never left it that low before unless it was summer. With the sound of the beep from the thermostat, the temperature was soon adjust back to 72 degrees. I made my way to the kitchen to grab a snack to satisfy my late hunger when I noticed there was a cup of water already on the counter of the island in the middle of the kitchen.
Weird, I don’t remember drinking any water before I went to bed. Shrugging it off, I simply set the cup back into the sink. I sat onto the counter as I quietly smacked on some pretzels I managed to find. I perked up at the sound of a familiar beep of the thermostat. Feeling curious and confused, I made my way back towards the strange machine. Glancing back at the machine, it now read 64 degrees. “Stupid machine” I muttered as I adjusted the temperature again before I headed back to bed.
Maybe an hour or two had passed before I felt the need to clench my thirst. I gotten out of bed before I headed back to the kitchen, shivering as I was freezing just a bit. I checked the thermostat on my way to the kitchen to see that it still read 72 degrees. But somehow it felt a lot more colder that that. A sound came from the kitchen, making me walk just a bit slower in my steps. It was hard to grasp the sound, but it sounded like it coming from the appliances. My fingers found the kitchen switch and flipped it on. I jumped back before the sight before me. There was a plate of food half way eaten with a drink right beside it while it was half full. I immediately ran out of the house and called the police as I waited with my next door neighbor, who was trying to calm my nerves. As the police arrived, I gave them great details of the strange events that happened thought the night. “Alright, we talked with your roommate. He seemed a little shaken up about the whole situation that went down tonight . But we never got his name? Do you mind telling us his name, so that we can have it in the file?” An police officer asked as he wrote down the report. I looked at him terrified as I felt the color in me slowly start to drain. A tear fell down my cheeks as I looked at the police officers that stood in front of me and my neighbors. I looked at them as I spoke, my voice shaking quite”I don’t have a roommate. I live alone.”. To the realization of the people in the room, we all ran back to the home to see that the back porch door was opened wide with a big, eerie message splattered on the wall in what I hoped to be red paint.
“You look beautiful when you’re sleeping”.
