Bubak
This is famous urban legend told to scare children
This urban legend is called by different names in different countries across the world. There is always a special place for the story of Bubak in the Czech Republic. There is no physical evidence found regarding bubak, so we were not able to exactly pinpoint the origin period of bubak. The Bubak is a story that is told generation after generation to the kids and their grandkids. Bubak is a monster. It has the structure of a scarecrow, which is used to drive away birds from the fields.
This bubak has the ability to stand still without moving for many hours. The facial structure and the body structure will fill our hearts with fear. This monster would hunt down its prey only during the night. The main target of this bubak is children. To attract people at night, this bubak would scream like a child at night. If someone goes near it, bubak will catch them in its bag and eat them later. Even today, many parents tell these kinds of stories to scare their children so that they don't go out in public during the night.
They say it's only for the safety of their children. In different countries, this monster is called by different names, and the stories are told in different versions. Krampus is a popular folktale in many European countries. It is described as half demon and half goat. This monster would take away the children that don't listen to their parents during Christmas time. According to the people, this legend was told even before the spread of Christianity in European countries. I will tell you about one such story that I heard of.
In one village, a girl named Lucia lived with her parents. They had farm land near their house. It was a corn field. One day, the parents had to travel to another city to make a deal with a dealer, so they left Lucia with a girl next door. The girl next door was great friends with Lucia's parents, so they trusted her so much.
After they left, Lucia roamed around the fields. She saw a new scarecrow planted in their fields. She didn't know about that until then. Then, after some time, when she was supposed to go home, she saw the scarecrow nearby. She was so frightened, she even thought this was an act by the neighbour girl to scare her. Lucia then went to the girl and shouted angrily about the event. The girl had no idea what Lucia was talking about. She suddenly rushed and closed all the windows and doors in the house.
When Lucia questioned her about the act, she explained to her the legend of Bubak and how it hunts down children. Lucia was not ready to listen to any excuse, so she went upstairs and started sleeping. But she had a bad feeling that something wrong was going to happen. Later that night, the girl heard a loud screaming noise from Lucia’s room, so she rushed to look at Lucia, but she was gone.
The girl tried searching for her all over the house, but her whole search was a waste of time. She then heard a noise in their field. She then fetched a torch light from the drawer and went out to find it. When she switched on the light, she saw corn fields shaking due to the movement of a person. She tried chasing them down the corn field, but the bubak escaped in front of the girl's eyes. This story is popular in many countries where the children live with their parents in villages with large fields.
