Beyond the Veil of the Skies

Flight into Madness

By Elysia DawnPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

The skies were dark and foreboding as the plane took off into the night, leaving behind the bustling city and its denizens. The passengers aboard the flight were a motley crew of travelers, each with their own reasons for taking to the skies. But as they soared higher and higher, a sense of unease settled over them, like a creeping mist that clung to their skin.

One passenger, a nervous man with thinning hair and a constant tremble in his hands, couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. He looked out the window, trying to calm himself with the sight of the moonlit clouds, but what he saw made his blood run cold. There was something moving out there, something that shouldn't have been there.

It was a shapeless mass, writhing and twisting in the blackness beyond the window. He rubbed his eyes, thinking it was just his imagination, but when he looked again it was still there, closer now, filling the entire field of view.

Suddenly, the plane shuddered violently, as if it had hit something. The passengers screamed in terror as they felt the aircraft begin to spiral out of control. The nervous man clutched his armrests, his eyes darting around the cabin as the other passengers were thrown about by the turbulence.

And then, as suddenly as it had begun, it stopped. The plane was flying smoothly again, as if nothing had happened. The passengers were dazed, confused, and afraid. But they soon realized that something was different.

The plane was empty. The seats around them were vacant, and there was no sign of the crew. The nervous man stumbled down the aisle, his heart pounding in his chest, and he saw something that made him scream in terror.

The passengers who had been thrown about were still there, but they were twisted and distorted, their limbs bent at impossible angles, their faces frozen in grotesque expressions of pain and fear. And in the back of the plane, he saw the writhing mass he had seen outside the window. It was pulsing and throbbing, like a living thing, and he knew in that moment that it was responsible for the carnage he saw before him.

He stumbled back down the aisle, his mind racing with fear and confusion. Was this some kind of nightmare? Had he gone mad? But then he heard a voice, a whisper in his ear that chilled him to the bone.

"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn," it hissed.

He turned to see a figure standing behind him, its features obscured by shadow. It spoke again, in a language he couldn't understand, and he knew in his heart that it was something beyond human comprehension. It was ancient, and malevolent, and it had come to claim the souls of those who had flown too close to its realm.

The nervous man tried to run, but he stumbled and fell, his eyes locked on the writhing mass in the back of the plane. He knew that he was doomed, that there was no escape from the horror that had taken over this flight. And as he felt a cold, slimy tendril wrap around his ankle, pulling him closer to the abyss, he knew that the end was near.

For in the skies, where mortals dared to soar, there were things that waited, hungry and eager to feast on the souls of those who flew too high. And the passengers on this flight had flown too high indeed, for they had strayed into the realm of the unspeakable horrors that lurked beyond the veil of our reality.

There's a lot of imagery here, and it was really easy to follow. I felt like I could place myself here in the story, and I think it takes a really talented writer to do that. So great job and can't wait to see more work you put out! -Kayla
