The door

"There was only one rule: Don't open the door."

Upon signing my new lease, the owner bestowed upon me those words. At that time, I didn't pay those words much mind. After all, the amount that I was paying for that house rental was a steal for all I was getting.

My very first night was exactly as I had hoped. Tranquil, almost serene.

It was a peacefully productive week. The space I had was amazing. Bubba, my chihuahua, was having the time of his life exploring as I sat finishing some writing at week's end.

"Night, night Bubba", I called. Much to my surprise he was already in the bedroom. As I walked in he jumped up toward the bed.

"Now, now, you know better."

But I simply couldn't resist, so up he went. He snuggled at my feet and within minutes we were both out for the night. But this was not like the other nights...

Amid the midst of the night, I was awakened by a loud caterwauling. At first I thought Bubba was having a nightmare, but upon closer inspection, he was still at my feet, like myself, sitting half up and alert. As I looked out my bedroom window, it was there.

"The Door" from the guesthouse.

An ominous light emitted around it. Shadowy images surrounding the door, beckoned my attention. Suddenly, my landlord's words echoed in my ear:

"There is only one rule: Don't open the door."

I was drawn toward the light. Don't Open...Paralyzed, aphasic, I could...not...no

Bubba yelped breaking the pull. Suddenly as if awakened from a nightmare, I came to. The light was gone. Upon dawn's awakening, I wondered.

Was it a nightmare?

I stood staring at the door as I sipped my tea.

Should I?

Better get some blinds.
