Backrooms Decrypted: The Insulation (Enigmatic Level)

The Insulation is the enigmatic level of the backrooms. It has a CLASS 4 survival difficulty rating. It is UNSAFE and UNSECURE, with a MEDIUM ENTITY COUNT. The insulation is a labyrinth of fiberglass walls and ceramic tiles, with a musty odor reminiscent of an attic. The region itself features light and dark parts, as well as spaces in between, and is known as "The Limbo" (more on that later). The insulation is linked to Levels 4 and 3, which reveals the random pipework and form of the level, however this, as well as the color of the fiberglass, might vary depending on which region you are in.

  • It should go without saying at this point that the backrooms are full of secrets. The backrooms, however, can frequently offer secrets compounded within secrets, some of which may be hiding things you might prefer not to find, much like a Russian doll. We rejoin Trish in Level 4 again with this unsettling fact in mind. When Trish and her squad unintentionally no clipped into the backrooms, she was an American soldier serving in Afghanistan at the time. Since then, the Backrooms have unfortunately waged a terrible attrition war against Trish's life, health, and sanity. Trish had undoubtedly already gone through a lot by this point, but the evil forces in the backrooms had only just begun in the overall scheme of things.
  • She had already encountered a number of grotesque creatures in the mysterious levels of the backrooms, including the cruel and unstoppable Barnaby Bun of Barnaby Bun's Fun Emporium and the rotting, ambulatory corpses that lurked in the terrifying Basement Level. In some ways, Trish was relieved to be back on Level 4, which is typically safe as long as you stay away from the windows. Despite the loss of her guns, Trish, a soldier at heart, didn't want to be satisfied with just surviving. She yearned to depart and lead a life. She was repeatedly tricked by doors, windows, elevators, and even by breaking through the floorboards, so she realized she needed to try a different route out.
  • She decided to channel John McClane to get out of this jam because Die Hard was Trish's all-time favorite movie. Trish would find a way to exit through the air vents. Because of her broad physique, even the ducts in this location appeared to be large enough for her to crawl through without difficulty. She had only one weapon left, a combat knife that she always carried fastened to her belt, and she could use it to open up a new possible escape route. It was simple for Trish to grab a desk nearby and push it under a vent on the upper half of a wall because Level 4, the abandoned office, had plenty of unused office equipment. She was able to use her knife as a makeshift screwdriver while standing up on the desk, gradually removing the rivets holding the grate in place until she was able to remove it without causing any long-term harm.
  • She had discovered that it was best to keep a low profile and be quiet inside. Carefully avoiding a sudden movement, she lifted herself into the vent and started to crawl through. The air was thick with sand, and she struggled to keep from hacking up a lung. Whatever the case, she persisted until she discovered the entryway into something else. These things weren't always as spotless and stainless as they appeared in the movies, were they? Happily, or unfortunately, depending on your perspective, she soon discovered what she was looking for. It only required dropping down below and unscrewing another vent grate. The insulation, specifically Area 1A, is the newest enigmatic level.
  • Yes, it's at that level. We advise going along with it. As you may have noticed, this level is referred to as "The Insulation" because a large portion of it is made up of fluffy, pink fiberglass attic insulation, the kind that is good for the environment and will help you save a lot of money on your heating bill each month. You're wasting your money if your house or apartment isn't properly insulated. Let's be real. Putting that aside, Trish briefly considered the possibility that she was now imprisoned in a strange world made of cotton candy because, well, who knows in the backrooms? However, she quickly realized that attic insulation made more sense and started to investigate.
  • All things considered, Area 1A had decent lighting, making it at least as welcoming as Level 4. Additionally, thanks to all that wonderful, money-saving attic insulation, it was warm and cozy, this is always a plus. The only drawback so far is that this strange, new insulated realm is relatively small, requiring Trish to repeatedly hug the walls just to fit through. Nevertheless, despite the countless layers of fluffy insulation and deteriorated wooden scaffolding that held everything together, the air didn't feel as stale as it probably should in such a small, crowded space. Even though nothing around here ever seemed to make sense, she was getting used to it. The intricateness and vastness of the winding halls of wood and insulation seemed to increase as she walked.
  • She started to question her location in relation to the rest of the world. Was this some sort of impossible alien mega structure, an underground base, or had she actually been transported into another entirely alien dimension where everything exists on a spectrum between utterly bizarre and incredibly hostile? Was any of this even real, or was it all just a delusion created by a fractured mind? Trish decided it probably wasn't all that helpful to dwell on these kinds of thoughts. She would be better off making active situational decisions on a case-by-case basis and doing her best to assess her immediate situation as best she could. Otherwise, she risked stress-related mental health problems.
  • Furthermore, it was not a good idea to become catatonic in a strange land populated by dangerous monsters. But before long, the Insulation's strangely calming passage would come to an end, and Trish would likely regret not savoring it more while it lasted. Trish found herself suddenly wandering into a location that appeared darker and more industrial, with no obvious point of delineation. Although there was still a lot of pink attic insulation, it was now broken up by wires and pipes that protruded from the ground and through the walls, giving the space a more menacing appearance. Area 1B is the name of this particular zone, which is still a part of the overall insulation level.
  • If you are in this area, you can be sure that worse things are going to happen. Trish, however, had no reason to be aware of that just yet; she was still blissfully ignorant of the being she would meet very, very soon. Instead, she continued to move forward as her eyes grew accustomed to the new environment's darkness.
