Rainy mornings are my favorite.
You can sit on your porch and watch the lightning streak across the sky, with a warm cup of rose tea in your hands.
I breathed in the sweet smell of a storm. My home overlooked a great forest ,which looked more alive because of the moss sprouting and, the fungus rooting. The deer running and,the bugs humming. The ducks swimming and the songbirds singing. Every part of it felt so alive. That’s why I loved my home.
The house itself was open with lots of windows. Up in the mountains I didn’t have to worry about any neighbors or, people in general. I grabbed a strawberry yogurt and ,sat on my couch with the dull light of the morning, pouring through the windows.
As I took my first few of my yogurt, my phone chimed its ringtone on the table in front of me. I stared down at it to see the number. When I realized it was my bestie I answered.
“Girl have you seen the news!” She erupted as soon as I picked up the phone.
“No,” I confessed ”what’s wrong?”
“Nothing it’s the huge advertisement!” She yelled.
I turned on the news channel. Bright flashes came across my screen. There were so many colors,it was hard to read, but what I managed to make out was this :
ADVERTISEMENT! ADVERTISEMENT!
FOR THE WORLDS BEST GAMESHOW! IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS AND RARE PRIZES CALL 000,000,GAME!
AND AUDITION FOR THE CHANCE OF A LIFETIME .
I was so excited I forgot about Lucy. I called the number right away. A smooth silky voice answered. “ May I help you?” “ Yes,” I replied,”I would love to audition for the gameshow!“ “ Of course!” She soothed in a almost sing-song voice. “ A survey will be sent to your house.” Then she hung up.
But I didn’t tell her my address. I thought as disappointment poured over me.
I had finished my yogurt awhile ago and, the empty cup sat in front of me. Lucy called again.
“ My call to the gameshow was canceled cause of false connection.” She groaned. With a puzzled expression I replied” It worked fine for me but I never told them my address to send the survey .” “ Odd.” Lucy replied “ ok ima go check my garden call you later.” I said.” See ya.” And with that she hung up.
I changed out of my fuzzy pajamas ,into my raincoat and boots. When I opened the back door ,I was immediately hit with cold water and chilly winds. I closed the door with great effort as the wind pulled it away from me, and descended down the hill towards my garden. The eerie glow from the windows was enchanting. I focused on my long skinny shadow, growing taller the farther I walk.
The tomato’s,cucumbers, peppers, zucchini, and kale were swamped with rain water. I needed to work out some sort of drainage or they would rot. The honey crisps and the fuzzy peaches clung desperately to there trees as the wind tore through the leaves.
I worked till lunch in the mud pulling out weeds and loose carrots. The rain was blinding and the winds, unforgiving. I harvested what I could then ran back to the house.
My boots were filled with water which soaked my socks. I had to pour them out before I entered. Hanging up my coat and, kicking off my boots, I dropped my load of fruits and vegetables in the sink. Then I ran upstairs to go take a warm long shower.
