Anyone who has ever lived in a city will attest to the fact that they can be extremely creepy places. With so many hidden corners, alleyways and abandoned buildings, there are plenty of opportunities for sinister things to take place. From the old legend of Bloody Mary to more modern urban myths like Slenderman, there is no shortage of scary stories which originate from cities across the world. Cities tend to have their own identity and characters, so it’s not surprising that so many urban legends center on them. They also tend to have a lot of lonely people who are willing to believe even the most outlandish stories about local landmarks, hotels or houses. Whether you live in a city or are just visiting, these urban legends are sure to give you goosebumps regardless of where you are!
Bloody Mary:
Bloody Mary is a classic urban legend that has been around since the 1930s. It tells the story of a girl who goes to a party and is dared to go into a bathroom, where she looks into a mirror and chants “Bloody Mary.” If she does this three times, then the ghost of Mary, who was executed for being a witch, will appear and kill her. The story has been around for so long that it’s now applied to different things; the most common is that if you go into a bathroom and look into the mirror while saying “Bloody Mary,” you will see the face of the girl who died while trying to summon Mary. While this can occur if you know what you’re doing, it’s not something you should try at home.
The Hook:
The Hook is a legend that has been told across America and in many different parts of the world. It tells the story of a girl who is walking home one night and sees a man with a yellow raincoat trying to catch a fish. She goes over to help him, but he says he’s not a “fisherman” and is actually trying to catch the “biggest fish in the world.” The girl goes on to help him catch the fish, but as she does, the man uses his hook to pull her in. He then takes her home and kills her, putting her on his wall “with the others.” It’s important not to help people with hooks, but also to be aware of the danger.
Dark corners of the Internet:
The Internet is a fantastic tool and a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. However, it also has its fair share of scary stories and images, and if you look in the wrong corner, you may find something that will haunt you for a very long time. The rule with the Internet is that you should never look something up unless you know exactly what you are looking for. If you type in a vague search, you may come across something you weren’t expecting. The scary stories on the Internet include the origins of Slenderman, which is one of the scariest man-made urban legends around. It’s also possible to come across disturbing images that have been designed to confuse Google’s algorithms, which are supposed to block potentially harmful images.
Dead Dolls:
The Dead Dolls are the stuff of nightmares. It’s a story that’s probably taken place in many different places, but it’s not something that anybody wants to encounter. Dead Dolls is when people take abandoned, broken dolls, attach them to fishing wire and hang them in trees or other high places where children are likely to find them. The dolls are often left in places where a child is likely to be alone, such as a playground or a graveyard. It’s important to never go near a doll that you find on the ground, no matter how badly you want to play with it.
Slenderman and other internet-based legends:
The Internet is a great place to keep in touch with people and catch up with what’s going on in their lives. However, it’s also home to many scary stories, urban legends, and creepypastas. One of the most shocking urban legends to arise out of the Internet is that of Slenderman. He came to fame after a group of 12-year-olds tried to murder one of their friends in his name. The story goes that Slenderman is a supernatural creature who is incredibly tall and wears a black suit. He has tentacle-like arms and can teleport at any time. If you come across him, he will kill you with his bare hands and then put your body in a forest and hang trees with your bones.
Haunted Hotels:
It’s not surprising that hotels have their fair share of urban legends. They attract a lot of people every day, and it’s likely that at least a few of them have a crazy story to tell. One of the most famous haunted hotels is the Stanley Hotel in Colorado. Stephen King wrote The Shining while staying at the hotel, and he used many real events that took place there as inspiration for his book. Other hotels with a haunted reputation include The Winchester Mystery House in California, where Sarah Winchester, the owner, built a house that sprawls for over 10,000 square feet. Guests claim to have heard strange sounds, seen mysterious lights, and smelled bad odors, which are all hallmarks of a haunted house.
Orphean Children:
Orphean children were children who were left outside, either as an act of abandonment or an attempt to save their lives. In many places in history, diseases like smallpox and typhoid were rampant, and many children who contracted them died. Orphean children were left outside of houses in the hopes that somebody would take them in and care for them. As you might expect, it was extremely common for them to be killed or maimed by wild animals or cruel people. People say that if you hear a child crying outside, you should open the door and let them in. However, it’s important not to open the door for every child you hear crying because it’s likely that somebody has put them there.
Wrapping up:
Cities are filled with history and culture, which can be both fascinating and creepy. They can also be very unfriendly places, particularly at night when all the lights are off, and there aren’t many people around. Whether it’s a hotel that’s been around for hundreds of years, or a modern-day story that’s been passed around on the Internet, there are plenty of scary urban legends out there which will keep you feeling on edge no matter where you are.
