Hilarious History
"If I got the plague, would I still have to go to work?"

Hello lovelies! I hope you are well and doing your best as always! If you didn't already know, I LOVE history. I've seen every documentary going from Suffragettes with Lucy Wolsey to Mary Beards' Why did the Roman Empire Collapse? I'm also not ashamed to admit that I have an unhealthy addiction for re-watching period dramas like The Last Kingdom or docu-dramas like Mehmed VS. Vlad in the Ottoman Empire series.
One bleak day back in my final year at university (while actively avoiding my assignments), I spotted Cunk on Britain. The synopsis read:
"Cunk (Diane Morgan) examines the history of Great Britain in the five-part mockumentary series `Cunk on Britain', written by Charlie Brooker."
*Instant click* I mean, I grew up with Horrible Histories. Can you blame me?
To summarise, Philomena Cunk knows absolutely nothing about fuck all. However, this does not deter Philomena from creating a ground-breaking historical documentary about all the bits that we've bothered to remember.
Take a quick look at some of the best moments from the docuseries, starting with asking the important questions like...
Now if you didn't click on the video and/or still aren't convinced to give this brilliantly written show a watch, then I need to tell you it is a satire in its finest form; chefs' kiss type.
"Edward [VI] died aged 15, which is the youngest anyone has ever died of old age."
The pure wit and sarcasm leaves me gasping for my tea, and I’m not the only one. Cunk has gained a cult following now that Cunk on Earth made its way to Netflix a few months ago. Besides the writing, there's Cunk herself. Diane Morgan is absolutely fantastic as Cunk. Morgan (Cunk) is so good that even when professionals and production teams alike break their cool bellying laughing, she is still in her character straight faced asking all the important questions.
So why is it worth the watch? How many times can we learn about history without getting bored? Well, this is where Philomena comes into it.
The show takes a refreshingly comedic take on historical events, like claiming that the Pizza Shop in central Rome would have been closed at the time of the collapse of the Roman Empire because apparently it happened on a Sunday and the Pizza shop isn't open Sundays.

For me, this show is such a comfort, like my beloved dressing gown and fluffy slippers. When I am feeling blue and a bit overwhelmed by the current state of our world, I pop this show on and within minutes I am giggling, no matter how many times I've seen and heard the same joke. Yes, the show is that good.
To persuade you even further, any of you who found history boring in school, I can promise you this show will keep you interested and entertained. Historians also find this show assuming, albeit not strictly historically accurate, in places. You can watch historians on YouTube reacting to this show and its painfully hilarious.

This show is binge-able on a weekend, especially on a rainy day. The show is that great. Netflix even recommended the show to Diane Morgan's own account. If you watch it all and you find yourself googling Brush Strokes or listening to Pump Up the Jam, you'll be pleased to know that there is a book Cunk on Everything.
So yea, escape from this chaotic world into the past, somewhere back there and enjoy!
