The Beginning of the War

A Soldier’s Journey

It was the year 1914. The world was changing fast, and people in Europe were worried. Countries were fighting to become stronger.

One day, something very bad happened. A man named Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed in a city called Sarajevo.

He was an important leader from Austria-Hungary. His death started a chain of events that led to a big war.

Soon, many countries joined the fight. Britain, France, and Russia were on one side. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and later the Ottoman Empire were on the other side.

This war was called World War 1. It was also called The Great War because it involved many countries and millions of people.

Meet Tom, the Young Soldier

Tom was a young man from England. He lived in a small village with his parents and little sister.

He worked as a farmer and loved the quiet life. One day, he heard the news: the country needed soldiers.

Posters were everywhere, saying, “Join the Army and Serve Your Country!”

Tom felt proud. He wanted to protect his home and his family. So, he signed up to be a soldier.

He hugged his mother goodbye, shook hands with his father, and gave his sister a small toy to remember him.

Then, he left with many other young men to begin training.

Training for Battle

Training camp was hard. The soldiers had to wake up very early. They ran long distances, climbed ropes, and learned how to shoot rifles.

The officers were strict and gave many orders. Tom missed home, but he made new friends. His best friend was Jack, a cheerful boy from London.

After three months, they were told they would go to France. That’s where the real fighting was happening.

The soldiers felt nervous but ready. They sang songs on the train and tried to stay strong.

Life in the Trenches

When Tom arrived in France, everything felt different. The air smelled like smoke and mud. The ground was wet, and the sky was grey.

Soldiers lived in trenches, which were long, narrow holes dug in the ground. These trenches kept them safe from enemy bullets.

Life in the trenches was very hard. It rained often, and the water made the ground muddy.

Rats ran around, and food was not always good. Sometimes, soldiers had to sleep sitting up. But they stayed strong and helped each other.

Tom wrote letters to his family. He told them not to worry. He said he missed them and hoped to come home soon.

The First Battle

One cold morning, the soldiers were told to get ready. They were going to attack the enemy’s trench. Tom’s heart beat fast.

He looked at Jack and nodded. They climbed up the trench and ran across the open land, called no man's land.

Bullets flew past them. Explosions shook the ground. Tom ran as fast as he could, shouting and holding his rifle.

He saw soldiers fall, and he kept running. He reached the enemy trench and helped take it.

After the battle, many soldiers were hurt. Some had died. Tom felt sad and tired. War was not like he thought.

It was scary and painful. But he knew he had to keep going.

A Letter from Home

One day, Tom got a letter from his sister. She said their dog had puppies. She also said their mother baked apple pie and missed him.

Tom smiled for the first time in weeks. That letter gave him strength.

He showed Jack the letter. Jack laughed and said, “I miss my mum’s cooking too!” That night, they shared stories about home and dreamed of peace.

Winter in the War

Winter came, and it was very cold. Snow fell on the trenches. Soldiers wore extra clothes, but many still got sick. '

Frostbite hurt their hands and feet. Food was frozen. The war slowed down, but they still had to be careful.

Tom and Jack stayed close. They looked after each other. They shared food and helped sick soldiers.

One night, on Christmas Eve, something special happened. The sound of singing came from the enemy’s side.

It was German soldiers singing Silent Night. The British soldiers joined in. They all stopped fighting for a little while.

Some even met in the middle of no man’s land to shake hands and share gifts. It was called the Christmas Truce. For a short time, there was peace.

A Terrible Day

Months passed. The war continued. One day, during a big attack, Jack was hit by a shell. Tom rushed to help him.

Jack was hurt badly. He looked at Tom and said, “Tell my mum I love her.”

Tom held his hand until he closed his eyes. Jack died in Tom’s arms. Tom cried that night.

He wrote a letter to Jack’s family, telling them how brave their son was.

The war had taken his best friend. Tom felt lost, but he knew he had to keep going—for Jack, and for peace.

The End of the War

In 1918, after four years of fighting, the war finally ended. The countries signed a peace agreement called the Armistice.

Soldiers cheered. Bells rang in cities. Families cried with happiness.

Tom was one of the lucky ones. He got to go home. He was thin and tired, but he was alive. His family welcomed him with hugs and tears.

His mother made his favorite meal. His sister showed him the puppies, now grown dogs.

But Tom had changed. He still heard the sounds of war in his dreams. He missed Jack and the others who didn’t come back. He knew he would never forget them.

A New Life

Tom started working on the farm again. The sun felt warm, and the fields looked green. He planted seeds and helped his father.

He wrote stories about the war to help people understand.

Sometimes he visited schools to talk to children about peace. He said, “War is hard and sad. We must always try to solve problems with words, not guns.”

Years passed. Tom grew older. He had a family of his own. Every year, on November 11th, he wore a red poppy and stood in silence.

He remembered his friends, the trenches, and the dream of peace.

Conclusion

Tom’s story is one of many from World War 1. It shows how young people gave everything for their country.

It reminds us that war is never easy, and peace is precious. We should always remember those who fought, and work for a better, kinder world.
