A Woman Against Russian And Soviet Imperialism

Stereotypes suggest that there are more male role-modes than female. This article provides the story of a young girl - Maro Makashvili, fighting against Russian and Soviet imperialism. She is a legend in the country of Georgia, a Caucasus nation with a rich history often shaped by its resistance to powerful empires like Russia and the Soviet Union. Patriotism is one of the driving forces of our humankind. The urge to fight for freedom shapes heroes and considering Maro's bravery, she is nothing but a beacon of hope to millions of young people who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice.

Early life

Mariam (Maro) Makashvili was born in 1902 into a deeply patriotic household. Maro's family were friends with Ilia Chavchavadze and Akaki Tsereteli, prominent Georgian writers and independence activists. It is no surprise that, from an early age, Maro vividly demonstrated an interest in and admiration for Georgian culture.

Political reality

In the 20th century, the geopolitical climate was tense. The First World War, the Russian Revolutions (1905; 1917; 1917;), and dramatic changes across Europe had weakened the occupying forces. As a result, the establishment of the Independent Republic of Georgia became a realistic possibility. Finally, on May 26, 1918, the nation declared independence from the Russian Empire.

The civilian initiative

The younger segment of Georgian community was certain that their nation needed a strong army, in order to properly protect their homeland from enemies. Consequently, young people created "The union - Shevardeni" an organization where they could learn self-defence. According to Maro Makashvili's diary, she was over the moon to be part of the organisation. Moreover, Maro and her friends would often organize charity events to help the poor. Most of her life stories are described in her personal diary. Her stories paint a crystal clear image of social situation in Georgia in 1918 - 1921.

Education

Lots of friends and relatives of Maro went to the Junker Training Battalion, an education centre dedicated to shaping young soldiers. Tragically, the battalion became the target of the first Bolshevik attack. During the assault, a spy claimed their first victim—Mikheil Makashvili. Although the perpetrator initially escaped, they were soon arrested. This action served as an evidence of Soviet imperialism's ambitions for expansion.

The Bolshevik attack

A few months after the death of Mikheil Makashvili, The Shulaveri incident occurred. The Bolsheviks planned a fake revolution in the small city of Shulaveri. The rebels established an unofficial government, which asked Russian Bolsheviks to liberate the "Tyranny" of Georgia.

Bolshevik Russia had a serious motive to invade The republic of Georgia. The entire Georgian population was prepared to demonstrate the resilience against Russians, but the enemy was eager to occupy a free nation. In a very short period of time many young people volunteered as soldiers or maids. Among them was a national hero of Georgia - Maro Makashvili.

Currently, I am alright. ... We are very close to Russians. Our solders are not giving up, they are fighting vigorously. They are determined. If there is a chance send some nuts and sweets... Be careful. Do not worry. we will win this battle, victoriously.
