Microsoft expanded the console’s entertainment capabilities with the Windows Media Center Extender, the Xbox was primarily the most powerful gaming machine of this generation.

The DVD movie capabilities had to be unlocked with the DVD Movie Playback Kit and you still needed to press the power button to turn the console on and off.
DVD Movie Playback
All the restrictions found on the Xbox are gone and this time the Xbox 360 acts as DVD movie player right out of the box.
As mentioned above, included with the Premium package (for a limited time) is the Xbox 360 Media Remote, which is basically a reduced version of the Xbox 360 Universal Remote.

It doesn’t include all the buttons associated with universal TV, such as a numerical keyboard, dedicated keys for volume and up-and-down channel changing.
Other than that, the remote included has everything you need to use the Xbox 360 as a DVD player with all the functionality found in a regular home DVD player - including the ability to open the disc tray and turn the console on/off.
In addition to those standard functions, both Xbox 360 remotes include the Xbox Guide button that allows you to the Xbox Gamer guide on the fly, all the time; even when you are using the console as a DVD or music player.
Although the Xbox 360 can display content in both standard and high definition, the DVD movie playback capabilities are only standard definition.
This is due to a requirement by the DVD Forum who dictate that all manufacturers of movie players use DVI or HDMI ports for high definition video.

Since the Xbox 360 does not yet have a set of AV cables that meet this requirement, DVD movie playback is now displayed in 480p.
This is an improvement over the Xbox, which was unable to play progressive scan video with DVD movies.
It is worth clarifying that neither the Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote nor the remote included throughout the holidays with this Premium package are required to navigate DVD onscreen menus.
The Xbox 360 controller works fine for this if needed. Of course, the process is more complicated than when using a remote.
