Pokemon Go isn't very disabled friendly
Random thoughts of a game I've been playing a lot
Now I love the game with all my heart, but it has so many problems. So consider this lengthy old rant as an act of tough love. I am a part of both local and online groups for pokemon go and I've been in the fandom for years. Pokemon Go has helped me keep in touch with online pals that I haven't spoken to in years.
It's occurred to me that Pokemon Go isn't very friendly towards disabled people. It's a game that encourages people to walk about, but it limits people who have physical disabilities and cannot get out and about. I am lucky to live in an area where there are niche groups that still love playing the game as much as I do and are happy to meet up now and again to play do routes and raids together. That's why I love the game so much because it helps bring people together in real life, and everybody knows at least on person who has played it.
I just don't like how Niantic seem to be greedy. They bring good events but they don't seem to listen to fans. I can understand why they want to take down spoofers, but it seems to be the wrong people getting punished. Accounts have been unfairly banned and it and all about money-making nowadays. All the good stuff seems to be behind a paywall. I don't believe that people should have to buy their way in so they can enjoy the game.
Sometimes I miss out on so many things because I don't have the money to buy coins or remote passes. Sometimes there are tickets you have to pay for events. There are free coins too, but they are only limited to 50 a day and can't get anything with 50 in the shop. All the good stuff is 500+ coins.
I really don't like shadow raids for example. The biggest reason for this is that they are local only so you can't join them remotely. This excludes so many people who find it challenging to go outside. Niantic hate spoofing, but they implement so many things that only encourage people to spoof even more.
Niantic need to do more to support players with physical disabilities. There are many reasons why people may not want to go outside; health, work, weather conditions, natural disasters and police incidents.
A friend wanted me to come to a shadow raid by the church, but due to a miscommunication I went to the wrong church, and they were unable to wait for me and I was unable to do any Lugia raids that day. Everyone had gone home by the time I was in town and there was nobody around to do them. People who would have loved to have done the raids but were unable to do so because they were too far away.
I reported a list of issues I've had with the game and the only they responded with is thanks for your feedback. Sometimes I get the remote raids pass and sometimes I have to report it more than once. I've been told to be careful because if I report glitches and bugs too many times I will get my account banned. I wish they could have offered me something to compensate, but they don't do this every time. It depends on which staff member you get on the day.
I wouldn't even bother with the support chat thing on the app because half of the time you are through to a bot and the choices are pre-selected and you never get to speak to an actual human being there.
I think they could do things like lift the remote raid pass limit of five a day to people with disabilities that would limit them from being able to go outside. It could be easy to implement as well. Whilst I think it's dehumanizing having to prove a disability, I think they could introduce something like a disability pass like the ones you get in Disney Land to access the VIP. And also a discount towards coins too.
Thanks for reading. I know I don't write on here much, but I do think it's a great platform to get things off my chest.
