Netflix May Be Making Their First PC Game

Netflix may actually be planning on making a AAA PC game. Although we may not have much information as of yet, it’s still exciting to think about.

Up until this point, Netflix has only dabbled in mobile gaming titled Netflix Gaming. For those of you who don't know, you can stream mobile games from the Netflix app on your smartphone or tablet. These can include games from the following categories.

• Action
• Adventure
• Arcade

But now, back on topic, job listings for various roles were spotted on the Netflix Jobs website by Mobilegamer.biz. These roles include the following.

• Art Director
• Technical Director
• Game Director

After clicking on the Game Director listing, I went through the description, which stated they wanted to forge “a brand-new AAA PC game.” The description also stated the following.

“Creating a great game that players want to come back to repeatedly is our primary goal”

There is also a “Responsibilities Include” section which includes a bunch of interesting information. Here is some of the information I found interesting.

“Develop and maintain a single source of truth about the game world, characters, universe, and narrative to assist with onboarding new team members”

It seems Netflix is adamant about creating a story/backstory which maintains its continuity, or at least that’s what I got from this statement. But this does mean that this game may have an intricate storyline/lore.

“Implement initial game features within the game prototype in Unreal Engine; Focus on rapid prototyping to quickly iterate to “find the fun””

It didn't precisely state it, but I'm guessing there is a high chance this game will be built on Unreal Engine 5. It wouldn't make much sense for Netflix to build their next game in an older version of UE. Therefore, UE5 is likely the way to go.

“Develop the world/characters/narrative that are worthy of a Netflix film/TV series”

This could potentially mean that along with the release of this game, Netflix is planning on making a corresponding movie/series in order to delve deeper into the lore and setting of their game.

This could be similar to Netflix’s Arcane series, which enlightened League of Legends players on the lore and backstory of the characters they play on a daily basis.

There is also an “Ideal Candidate” section on this listing which also includes some interesting information. Here are the ones that stuck out to me.

“Deeply passionate about social systems and gameplay — both cooperative and competitive”

This statement almost confirms a PvP-oriented multiplayer game, but it could also suggest this game may have some PvE elements as well.

“Experience with FPS and/or Third Person Shooter games is preferred”

Although this doesn't officially confirm it, this statement could mean this new game will be somewhat of a first-person or third-person shooter.

Considering all this information, I’m guessing Netflix may be developing somewhat of an MMORPG similar to Destiny 2. Don't quote me on that since I could be completely and utterly wrong, but from this evidence, it seems plausible.

With PvP and possibly PvE gameplay, an intricate story/world/characters, and a focus on lore with a potential Netflix movie/series tied to it, an MMORPG is what I can see this game becoming.

Although it is possible this game could turn out to be a unique FPS (First Person Shooter) game similar to Call of Duty or Battlefield. Personally, I really hope it's a new MMORPG built on Unreal Engine 5.
