Koei Tecmo announces Ninja Gaiden 4
Koei Tecmo has officially announced Ninja Gaiden 4 the next installment in its iconic action game series. The announcement came as a surprise during the Xbox Developer Direct. This time the game introduces a new storyline and protagonist setting it apart from the series' iconic hero Ryu Hayabusa.
A New Hero: Enter Yakumo
Although the game is titled Ninja Gaiden 4 it is not a direct sequel to previous titles. The focus shifts to Yakumo a new character who opposes Ryu Hayabusa. In an Xbox blog post producer Yuji Nakao shared that the game is set in a transformed chaotic Tokyo, where the Dark Dragon’s return has plunged the city into turmoil. One of the core themes of this story is the return of the Dark Dragon which has thrown the city into chaos. Under these unsettling conditions Yakumo will face off against his enemies including the formidable Master Ninja Ryu Hayabusa Nakao said.
Story and Setting
Ninja Gaiden 4 takes place in a futuristic Tokyo overrun by monstrous creatures from another world. The primary antagonist the Dark Dragon an embodiment of hatred and a recurring foe in the series returns to wreak havoc.
New Gameplay and Abilities
Yakumo is a unique protagonist equipped with a fresh set of ninja abilities. The gameplay features wall jumping rail grinding reminiscent of Tony Hawk’s style and wire based skills that are crucial for both traversal and combat.
Yakumo wields two distinct combat styles:
Bloodraven Style: A modernized variation of traditional swordplay that pays homage to the series' classic gameplay.
Nue Style: Focused on swift attacks with extended reach, creating fast paced exhilarating battles.
Collaboration with Platinum Games
The development of Ninja Gaiden 4 includes a partnership with Platinum Games, the renowned studio behind titles such as the Bayonetta trilogy, Astral Chain and NieR Automata. Platinum Games expertise in high speed action games brings a new dimension to the Ninja Gaiden series.
One of the key differences between modern action games and Ninja Gaiden lies in the sense of fairness when confronting enemies Nakao explained. Enemies are designed to be masters of defense and experts of unrelenting aggression but players never feel they’re at an unfair disadvantage. Release Details
Ninja Gaiden 4 is set to launch in Fall 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5.

Koei Tecmo also announced that Ninja Gaiden 2: Black, a remake of the series’ second game, is now available on PC and consoles. This updated version of the original 2008 release features enhanced visuals and quality-of-life improvements for character and weapon upgrades.
