Chapter 5: Havana

Sam had fled to Cuba with Virginia, and I only knew one way to pursue: my old friend and favorite pilot, Jack Hayes. I only hoped that we'd be able to pick up Sam's trail once we arrived in Havana.

Jack Hayes and I met during the war. I was a nurse, and he was a pilot. In the years after, we kept in touch. He was still a flier. And he was writing a novel. I knew if anyone could get me to Cuba in time to stop Sam, it would be Jack.

June: Jack? Hello? Is anyone there?

Clue #1

June: Late night?

Jack: Huh? Oh, yeah. Working on my novel.

June: Uh-huh. Looks like you did more drinking than writing.

Jack: It's liquid inspiration. How do you think Hemingway does it?

June: You okay to fly?

Jack: Yeah, right as rain. No problem. Just let me find my flight jacket and I'll be good to go.

Clue #2

June: Do I want to know how your flight jacket got up there?

Jack: You wouldn't believe me if I told you.

June: Jack, this is serious. My niece is in trouble.

Jack: Juney, don't worry. I'll get you there. Have I ever let you down?

June: Jack, you've been to Havana. Got any connections who could help us find Sam and Virginia?

Jack: My familiarity with Havana is more of the rum and cigars variety. Though there is one guy. I don't know him personally. Name's Julian Reyes. They say if you want to know what goes on in Havana, you talk to Julian.

June: Julian Reyes. Now why does that name sound familiar?

Clue #3

June: You don't mean the Julian Reye who's running for mayor?

Jack: That's him all right.

June: Okay, so where do we find him?

Jack: That's tricky. A man like Julian is in high demand. You don't just show up at his house uninvited.

June: So how do you know about this Julian?

Jack: I lost a cool hundred to him in a game of poker.

June: So Julian's a gambler. What else can you tell me?

Jack: He owns a half-dozen hotels in Havana. But The Argent is his crown jewel. World leaders, movie stars, even Al Capone once stayed there, and Julian's always nearby.

Clue #4

June: The Argent is just down the road. Let's go.

Jack: Listen, Juney. I know you want to find your niece, but Julian's a busy man. Even if he's at the Argent, I wouldn't count on --

June: Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Come on, I'll buy you a drink. Any sign of Julian?

Jack: I warned you, he's not an easy man to find.

June: God, I'm such a fool. What made me think I could track Sam down all by myself?

Jack: Don't say that. We'll find them. I'll go ask the hotel staff. You wait here.

No sooner had Jack walked off than the bartender pushed a drink my way...

Clue #5

June: Excuse me, bartender? There must be some mistake. I didn't order this.

Julian: No, I did. I think you will like it.

June: You presume a lot, Senor...

Julian: Julian Reyes. Please, call me Julian. And you?

June: June Parker. A pleasure to meet you.

Julian: Now, tell me, why is a beautiful woman sitting all alone at a hotel bar?

June: It's a long, sad story.

Julian: I have time.

June: I'm looking for my niece, Virginia. She was kidnapped by a man who claims to be her father.

Julian: This niece and her so-called father. They wouldn't happen to have red hair by any chance?

June: Why, yes. How did you...?

Julian: I may be able to help you, but I must do something first. Come to my home tonight.

Clue #6

Just like that, he was gone. But before he left, he slid a piece of paper under my drink.

Jack: Well, the locals don't know anything, but they did win twenty bucks off me. What did you find?

June: It's an invitation, to a party tonight at Julian Reyes's house. Julian says he can help us find Sam and Virginia.

Jack: I still can't believe you met Julian Reyes and didn't call me over.

June: It all happened so fast. I'm not even sure why he wants to help us.

Jack: Well, that's not hard to figure out. All you have to do is look in a mirror.

June: Ha. Maybe ten years ago... Damn. This party's huge. How will we find him?

Jack: We could always check the poker tables.

Clue #7

June: Found the poker table.

Jack: But no Julian.

June: Well, maybe he'll turn up still. Why don't you play a couple of hands?

Jack: And what about you?

June: I'll keep searching the party. You give a shout if Julian makes an appearance.

The party was loud, hot, and crowded. I wasn't sure how I'd find Julian amid all of the drinking and dancing. But then, there he was. Like a king surveying his kingdom.

Clue #8

June: Julian?

Julian: June. I'm glad you came. I was hoping you'd come.

June: My niece... have you learned anything?

Julian: Pick out a record. We can talk while we dance.

Clue #9

I picked out the first record I found. "It Had To Be You."

Julian: You see? This is nice. Now, when you mentioned your niece earlier, I knew I had seen her somewhere. It was at one of my hotels.

June: You've seen Virginia? And Sam? Why didn't you tell me this afternoon?

Julian: I couldn't be sure. After we talked, I sent a private investigator to verify. He sent over some photos.

Clue #10

June: That's them. But where are they?

Julian: It's the lobby of one of my hotels. The Grande.

June: You have to take me there. I can't let him take Virginia.
