Chapter 10: To Catch a Thief

We boarded a train to Italy on the trail of Pascal's killer. But the trail led to the least likely of suspects.

June: So the tailor shop should be in the main square here. The card we found had an image of a kitten playing with a ball of yarn.

Clue #1

June: This looks like the place. "Viola Russo, Seamstress."

Viola: I'm Viola. May I help you?

June: Yes, thank you. I'm looking for a young man, brown hair, average weight.

Amelia: He bought a very distinctive purple vest here.

Viola: I'm sorry, but I don't keep track of every customer.

Bernardo: A purple vest? Reminds of Cesare.

Viola: Shh. Dad.

June: Who's Cesare?

Viola: Don't mind my father. He's thinking of the vest my husband wore at our wedding. But that was 17 years ago.

Bernardo: No, I remember seeing it recently. I have a picture. It's in my bag. Where's my bag?

Clue #2

Bernardo: My bag. I found it. Let me show you the photo. This is Cesare, here's Viola, and this is Luca -- spitting image of his father.

June: Do you think I could speak to Cesare?

Viola: Cesare's not here right now.

June: It's very important. Do you know where I can find him?

Viola: Fine, if you insist. He's up the main road about a mile.

...

June: A cemetery? This can't be right.

Amelia: Viola said her husband Cesare would be here.

Virginia: What about that man over there? He looks like Cesare.

Clue #3

Virginia: Excuse me, are you... Oh, I thought you were someone else. Sorry to have bothered you.

Luca: It's no bother at all. I'm Luca. And you are?

Virginia: I'm Virginia. I just arrived in town this morning.

Luca: I thought so. I would have remembered seeing you before.

...

Virginia: Aunt June, this is Luca.

June: Luca? You're the boy from the photo. You're Cesare's son.

Luca: Yes. How did you know my father?

June: "Did?" Do you mean...

Luca: My father's dead. His marker is right over there.

Clue #4

June: "Cesare Russo, beloved husband and father, 1892 - 1925."

Virginia: Luca, I'm so sorry.

Luca: It's okay. I still have my mother and my grandfather. Hey, would you like some ice cream? My favorite gelato cart is right up the road.

Virginia: Aunt June, can we?

June: I think ice cream sounds lovely.

...

June: The man we're looking for, Pascal's killer -- it couldn't be Luca, could it? When I saw that picture of Cesare in the purple vest, I was sure we'd found our man.

Amelia: I don't understand why Viola didn't just come out and tell us that Cesare was dead. What are we waiting for? We should be talking to this kid.

June: I just don't have the heart. Look at them.

Clue #5

June: They sure are sweet together. And Virginia looks so happy. Can you really imagine Luca planning an art robbery and killing someone?

Amelia: No, I can't. Dammit. So what now?

June: Let's just let them finish their ice cream.

...

Amelia: Wait, do you see Luca? Where did he go?

June: I don't know. He jumped up suddenly. It looked like something startled him.

Amelia: But what?

June: He was looking in the direction of the clock tower.

Clue #6

June: Silvio! What is he doing here?

Amelia: And why did Luca run off as soon as he saw him?

June: Virginia, where did Luca go?

Virginia: He needed to get back to the shop. He said he was running late.

June: So suddenly? Something about this doesn't feel right.

...

June: You're sure Luca said he was coming here?

Virginia: Yes, he was going to pick up his grandfather. Why do you want to talk to Luca?

June: I just want to ask him a few questions.

Clue #7

June: It's closed. Either Luca didn't come here, or we just missed him.

Silvio: Where is that boy?

Amelia: What are you doing here, Silvio?

Silvio: I'm looking for the little thief who stole my painting! What are YOU doing here?

Amelia: Looking for Pascal's killer.

Silvio: Oh, playing amateur detective, are we? Just try not to much things up for me.

...

Virginia: "That little thief." Wait, did Silvio mean Luca? Aunt June, you don't believe Luca's guilty too, do you?

June: I'm not sure, I... Wait, did you see someone?

Clue #8

June: Is that Luca?

Virginia: That can't be him. Luca is taller.

Amelia: Whoever it is, he's carrying something. Could be the painting.

June: We need to follow him.

...

June: I think he ran in here. Do you see him? Where did he go?

Clue #9

June: The purple vest. It was stashed near the vestry.

Amelia: It's torn. Several witnesses said Pascal got into a fight the night he died.

June: So that's how the vest got ripped. But we still don't know for certain who was wearing it.

Virginia: What even makes you think Luca's guilty?

June: He matches the description of Pascal's accomplice, and he's been acting suspiciously.

Amelia: He ran off when he saw Silvio. He lied about going to the tailor shop.

June: If he's not guilty, he knows something. And we need to find him.

Clue #10

June: Footprints. It looks like Luca ran into the bell tower.

Amelia: Hmm. His feet are smaller than I would have expected.

June: What is that supposed to mean?

Amelia: Nothing. I'm just surprised. He has small feet.
