Chapter 16: The Singer & The Saxophonist

We'd found the murder weapon right where the photograph showed Bobby (or someone who looked a lot like him) hiding it. The situation was grim, but it was about to get much worse.

Mrs. Talbot: June. Tell me you don't believe Bobby's guilty.

June: I don't know what to say. The pictures show him hiding the murder weapon.

Mrs. Talbot: Those pictures were taken from behind. That could have been anyone.

June: But the weapon was in Bobby's bag. I don't know what to think. I'm sorry.

Clue #1

June: Damn. The police are here. Someone must have tipped them off.

Detective Martel: Some people simply can't take a hint, can they? But I should be thanking you. You found the weapon that was used to kill Ray Conroy.

June: We found a knife in the bayou, but--

Detective Martel: I'll take that, thank you. This should be enough for a warrant for Robert Talbot's arrest.

...

Mrs. Talbot: June. Listen to me. I have served your family for nearly forty years. I never asked for anything. I never needed to. But we have to prove my son's innocence.

June: Well, Bobby did say that he thought the police had been paid off by someone.

Mrs. Talbot: Of course. He's being framed. Someone's out to get him.

June: We need proof. All we have right now is Bobby's word.

Clue #2

Mrs. Talbot: What are you doing?

June: Helping myself to the detective's keys.

Mrs. Talbot: Oh dear.

June: There's only one way to know for sure if Detective Martel is being paid to frame Bobby.

...

Mrs. Talbot: June. Are you sure we should be doing this?

June: Do you want to prove Bobby's innocence?

Mrs. Talbot: Yes, but isn't this...illegal?

June: That only matters if Bobby was wrong about the police being corrupt.

Clue #3

June: What's this? A letter from Ray Conroy.

Mrs. Talbot: The man Bobby is accused of killing. What does it say?

June: It's a complaint about... the cost of permits for his automobile import business? Odd. A police detective doesn't usually handle permits.

Mrs. Talbot: Bobby said he was running from a big-time gambler who'd bribed the police. Could Ray Conroy be the gambler?

June: Ray was already dead by the time we talked to Bobby. Though perhaps Bobby didn't know. Hmm. Now why would Detective Martel's desk drawer have a false bottom?

clue #4

June: Looks like we just caught someone with his hand in the cookie jar.

Mrs. Talbot: What is it?

June: A ledger, with a list of dollar amounts to the tune of almost $20,000.

Mrs. Talbot: Payouts? But from whom? Ray Conroy?

June: That's the $20,000 question. The ledger doesn't give any clue. But I know who we can ask.

...

Elliot: June, Mama Talbot. Welcome to my home. Do come in. I apologize for the mess. My housekeeper left my employ rather suddenly. But that's neither here nor there. What can I help you with?

June: I'm still looking for a way to prove Bobby Talbot's innocence.

Elliot: You might be the only ones, I'm afraid.

Clue #5

June: "Jazz Musician Hides Murder Weapon in Swamp. Police Search Extends to Nearby States."

Mrs. Talbot: They printed the pictures you showed us. The ones that show Bobby...

Elliot: I'm sorry. After the police found the weapon, there was nothing I could do.

June: They certainly didn't waste any time. Printed a special edition and everything. We found a ledger in Detective Martel's office that looks like a list of bribes.

Elliot: Well, it wouldn't surprise me. New Orleans is a rotten city.

June: Any idea who might have been paying the detective off?

Elliot: No. Well... I don't like to engage in speculation.

June: But you have an idea?

Elliot: The victim himself. Ray Conroy. He ran an auto import shop. I have the card here somewhere.

Clue #6

June: Here. Ray's Imports. Delmont and Broad.

Elliot: That's the place. Anyhow, there were always rumors that his shop was just a front.

June: A front for what?

Elliot: Gambling, mainly. Ray was a big-time poker player on the riverboat scene.

June: Hmm. Rumor not, sounds like it's worth looking into. Thank you.

Elliot: You're most welcome. Bobby's truly fortunate to have a champion like you in his corner.

...

June: Ray's Imports. It's much nicer than I was expecting.

Mrs. Talbot: Is that... Stella?

Clue #7

June: It is. Stell and Detective Martel.

Stella: Oh. It's you.

June: It's lovely to see you, too.

Stella: Forgive me if I'm not ecstatic to see the mother of my husband's murderer.

June: Well, she left in a hurry. As did Detective Martel. I wonder what they're hiding.

...

June: It occurs to me that Ray Conroy might be an innocent victim in all of this.

Mrs. Talbot: What do you mean?

June: Think about it. Stella told us quite a story about Bobby's obsession with her, didn't she? She also said she and Ray were on the "outs." What if she killed him, and framed Bobby?

Mrs. Talbot: But why? What does she have against Bobby?

June: I don't know. Not yet. Help me find a way into the garage.

Clue #8

June: An open window. My lucky day.

Mrs. Talbot: You do spend a lot of time breaking and entering, don't you?

June: A girl's got to have hobbies.

...

Mrs. Talbot: So what exactly are we looking for?

June: Elliot said there were rumors that Ray was running a big-time gambling operation. He also said that Ray might have been bribing the police. Let's hope he left a paper trail.

Clue #9

June: Another ledger. Hold on. These numbers look very familiar.

Mrs. Talbot: They match the dollar amounts in Detective Martel's ledger.

June: Great. We're one step closer to proving that Detective Martel was taking bribes.

Mrs. Talbot: So Ray or Stella. One of them was bribing Detective Martel.

June: To the tune of $20,000. That's not small change.

Mrs. Talbot: Where would a garage owner get that kind of money?

June: Not sure. We should keep looking.

Clue #10

June: Ah. A safe. But it's open... and empty.

Mrs. Talbot: Bobby was carrying a case of money when we saw him. Do you think he...?

June: Stole it? I don't know. Stella could have cleaned the safe out, too. Wait... what was that noise?
