Gone Fission! Appalachia's Newest Addiction: Fishing in Fallout 76

A Guide to Fishing in Fallout

By Erica RosePublished 7 months ago 6 min read

Helllo fellow vault dwellers! If you thought the wasteland was all about nukes, legendary farming, and getting wrecked by a Scorchbeast Queen, you've clearly been living under a rock – or perhaps, a particularly irradiated boulder. Because the freshest catch in Fallout 76 isn't a legendary drop from a boss, it's a legendary fish! That's right, Wasteland Anglers, the "Gone Fission" update has finally reeled in one of the most anticipated features: FISHING!

Forget your power armor, stash your heavy weapons (for a bit, anyway), and grab your trusty rod. Appalachia's waterways, from the murky swamps of the Mire to the bubbling springs of the Forest, are now teeming with aquatic life just begging to be hooked. This ain't no casual clicker game, folks; Bethesda has cooked up a surprisingly engaging system that'll have you feeling like a true master angler, or at least, a slightly less confused Vault Dweller with a new hobby.

Casting Off into the Great Beyond (of Water)

The journey to becoming a bona fide fisherman starts with the new quest, "Casting Off." It's a quick intro that leads you to the delightful (and slightly unsettling) Fisherman's Rest in the Mire. Here, you'll meet the peculiar Captain Raymond Clark and the even more peculiar "Fisherman", who'll hook you up with your first Fishing Rod and some basic Common Bait. Consider this your entry-level gear, the equivalent of a rusty pipe pistol – it'll get the job done, but you'll be eyeing those upgrades pretty quickly.

The actual fishing mechanic is a surprisingly chill, yet skill-based mini-game. Once you find a suitable spot (any water deep enough to swim in, basically, though certain locales are hotbeds for specific species), you'll cast your line. Then it's all about watching that bobber like a hawk. A subtle dip, a quick twitch, then – BAM! – the full submergence. That's your cue to reel 'em in. The mini-game then shifts to a radar-like display where you need to keep a moving fish icon within a glowing zone. Miss too many times, and that fish is gone, along with your bait. It’s got that classic "easy to learn, hard to master" vibe, perfect for those moments when you just want to unwind from the constant threat of irradiated fauna.

Rod Mods: Gearing Up for the Big Ones

Just like your trusty Fixer or your favorite heavy gun, your Fishing Rod isn't just a static stick. It's fully moddable, allowing for some serious customization that can turn you from a casual bobber-watcher into a certified lunker-hunter. These mods come in two main categories: Hooks and Reels.

Hooks: These bad boys affect how the mini-game plays out. Want fish to bite faster? The Attractive Hook is your jam. Need more reaction time when a fish bites? The Improved Bearing might be your best friend. Other hooks, like the Advanced Drag and Stabilized Gear Ratio, can help with line strength and overall control, making those feisty legendary catches less of a headache. You'll snag these mod plans from the repeatable daily quest, "Big Fish in a Small Pond", so get ready to grind for those perfect attachments!

Reels: If hooks are about precision, reels are about power and speed. Mods like the Mark 2, Mark 3, and Mark 4 Reels increase your reel-in speed and reduce the chances of a fish escaping. Think of it as putting a powerful receiver on your rifle – it just makes everything smoother and more efficient.

And let's not forget the Bait! Besides the common stuff, you've got Improved Bait (great for uncommon catches and found from daily quests/public events) and Superb Bait (the crème de la crème, often tied to the seasonal Scoreboard, increasing your chances for those elusive rare and legendary fish). Choosing the right bait for the right conditions is key to maximizing your haul.

Aquatic Appalachia: Fish by Region

Appalachia's diverse biomes aren't just for varied scenery; they're home to a unique array of fish! Different regions offer different common, uncommon, and even glowing variations of fish. And weather? Oh yeah, weather plays a huge role. Rain often boosts your odds for region-specific fish and the highly coveted Axolotls, while Radstorms and nuke zones are your go-to for those glowing variants.6

Our radiated home's aquatic residents you can expect to find:

The Forest: Your starting zone offers classic catches like the Timber Sawgill and the Kanawha Piranha. Look out for the Glowing Kanawha Piranha during radiated weather, I myself set up camp under the Nuka factory and used the weather machine ‘Thundersorm’ with this I caught both the glowing and regular piranha.

Toxic Valley: Don't let the name deter you! This region is home to the Noxious Sawgill, the Potbelly Kelt, and the Purple Radpole. Keep an eye out for the Glowing Potbelly Kelt.

Savage Divide: As rugged as the landscape, you'll find the Alpine Sawgill, Leatherback, and the armored Armored Spinefish. The Glowing Spinefish lurks in its irradiated waters.

The Mire: Naturally, this swampy region is a prime fishing ground for the Muddy Sawgill, the elusive Spikesnapper, and the robust Gulpy. The Glowing Gulpy is a highly sought-after catch here.

Ash Heap: Even this desolate industrial zone has its aquatic gems, like the Sooty Sawgill and the Ashen Ambusher. A lucky cast might net you a Glowing Ambusher.

Cranberry Bog: A notoriously dangerous region, but worth the risk for the Bog Sawgill and the Blisterfish. Don't forget the Glowing Bog Lurker!

Skyline Valley: The newest addition to the map brings its own unique aquatic life, including the Static Sawgill, Bluefin Zapper, and the Stormswimmer. Try your luck for the Glowing Stormswimmer.

Beyond regional and glowing variants, there are also Generic Fish found everywhere (like the Brook Silverside, Redbelly, Sunscream, Chain Pickerel, Ridge Trout, Smoky Salmon, and Walleye), which are your bread and butter for fish bits. But the real prize for dedicated anglers are the Local Legends, specific fish tied to unique, named locations (like the Ryl-Tkannoth, Maw-Begotten at Big Maw, or the Organ Grinder in Organ Cave). And let's not forget the truly rare, monthly rotating Axolotls – these guys are the white whales of Appalachia's fishing scene!

Why Fish? Beyond the Bragging Rights!

So, why bother with this tranquil pastime in a post-apocalyptic world? Plenty of reasons, my friend!

Scrip, Scrip, and More Scrip: The most enticing reason for many grinders. You can trade your freshly caught fish (or cooked Fish Bits) with Linda-Lee, the adorable giant hermit crab at Fisherman's Rest, for legendary items! This is a fantastic new avenue for feeding your scrip addiction, especially when daily ops or public events are on cooldown.

Noms for Days: Cooked fish, like Grilled Fish, offer health and hunger benefits. It's a sustainable source of food, and honestly, a nice change of pace from Cram and Salisbury Steak.

CAMP Decor and Fashion: Show off your angling prowess! Mount your prized catches in your C.A.M.P. There are also new fishing-themed C.A.M.P. items and even some sweet fishing rod skins and bobber cosmetics available through challenges and the Scoreboard. Who doesn't want a Quantum Bobber?

Challenges and Achievements: Of course, it wouldn't be Fallout 76 without challenges. Catching specific types of fish, fishing in certain conditions, and reeling in a set number of fish will earn you sweet XP and other rewards.

The Chill Factor: Let's be real, sometimes you just need a break from the relentless grind and the constant threat of super mutants. Fishing offers a surprisingly serene and engaging activity that can be done solo or with your squad. It's a great way to unwind, soak in the ambient sounds of Appalachia, and maybe even discover some hidden beauty in the wasteland's waterways.

The Verdict: Is Fishing a Keeper?

Absolutely! The "Gone Fission" update has landed a big one with fishing. It's not just a filler activity; it's a well-implemented system with depth, rewards, and that classic Fallout 76 charm. Whether you're a hardcore player looking for a new source of legendaries or a casual wanderer seeking some relaxation, casting a line in Appalachia is definitely worth your time.

So, grab your bait, mod up your rod, and get ready to yell "Fish on!" from the shores of your favorite irradiated lake. The waters are waiting, Vault Dwellers – it's time to get your fins wet!

The fishing in Fallout 76 sounds cool. I remember when I first tried a similar game's fishing. It was tricky at first, but then I got the hang of it. Can't wait to try this in 76.
