Don't Starve: A guide

Getting started in a vanilla world

By Morgan CrosbyPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Welcome to another guide for one of my favorite games: Don't Starve. Now this is the vanilla, single player experience. This can be applied to the Nintendo Switch version, mobile version, or PC version. Are there plenty of mods out there to make the game easier? Sure there are. But those of us on mobile do not have access to those mods. Today's guide is for those poor people without beefy computers to run lots of mods.

Now, how can you make the world you are about to generate a little easier? It's as simple as going to the setting before making the world. Turn up carrots and berry bushes, turn down hound and boss attacks. Some other options are to change the settings for day cycles. Make the days longer and nights shorter. Start in fall. Personally, I opt for fewer bosses and more food. The main objective is don't starve, of course.

Generate your world. Gather a full stack of grass and sticks, and get as much flint as possible. Gather carrots. Do not pick the berries unless you are desperate. Why you ask? Berries are marked on your map so you can go back to them later. If you leave them unpicked and live off carrots until winter, you will have a reliable food source. Can you gather poop and make a berry farm? Yes, but that takes time. You are rushing to get ready for winter, or whatever season is next.

Spend about ten days adventuring before settling down. Gather as much flint as possible, see if you can find any fallen survivors to loot. Chances are you can find a backpack or a shovel. Locate as much as you can, such as pig houses and spider dens. Don't worry about looting them right now, as boards, stone blocks, and silk take up space you don't have in your inventory. Following the edge of the world is a good exploration method, but do as you please.

Find gold! I cannot stress this enough. Gold is needed for a science machine, alchemy engine, magic, and upgraded tools. Gather at least a stack before settling down and that will get you going fine. Base location is up to you. I prefer to begin with a food source a short distance away. This can be ponds, a tallbird nest, or beefalo's. Poop is important to fertilize berry bushes and grass, along with building farms. You can use regular old traps, made from grass and sticks to trap frogs. This won't work in winter, which is why this next part is important.

Drying racks! Find a forest far from your base, and burn it. BURN IT ALL DOWN! Chop it all down, gather all the charcoal, go home and make a couple drying racks for those frog legs you've gathered. Jerky spoils very slowly, and is great for long journeys or when you've run out of fresh food. Can you make a fridge? Yes, but you need gears for that, and those are only obtainable by killing clockworks, digging up graves, or finding in tumbleweeds.

Once you have a few drying racks, a stone fire, and a good source of meat, prepare for winter. Make a crock pot and create one of the most filling meals of all. Meatballs! Made from one meat and 3 filler, be that veggies or fruit, it fills a majority of your hunger. Jerky can also fill hunger, sanity, and health. It is good for exploring if you happen to run into some nasty spiders on the way.

Weapons! A basic spear is good to start with. Carry a log suit to switch to if you need to battle and drop your backpack. Once you've made base, you can craft a hammer and smash some pig houses or pig heads to get pig skin. Pig skin is good for a football helmet, and I prefer to wear a football helmet as protection and keep my backpack on at all times. If you can find a large piece of meat, either by killing a tall bird, beefalo, or pig man, you can make a ham bat. That will be good for now.

Warmth is important for winter. You can easily freeze to death without fire and insulation. Make a pair of bunny earmuffs by catching rabbits, shear a beefalo while they're sleeping, make a thermal stone. Make a winter hat. If you're able, making a boomerang to kill birds and bunnies in one hit is a good source of meat during winter.

And that's it! You now have the skills needed to get started in Don't Starve vanilla. Hope you guys enjoyed this guide and enjoy a video made by me of my 100 day base in Don't Starve!
