Baldur's Gate 3

My very uninformed review

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 2 years ago Updated 2 years ago 3 min read

I consume lots of different kinds of media; books, comic books, movies, tv but one thing that I could never get into was video games. I generally prefer my media to be slightly less interactive. I get bored easily and to be totally honest I don’t have a very large attention span so having to go through an entire story with objectives is just too much. My poor husband has been trying to get me to play games with him for about 2 years now and he has finally succeeded. The game that broke the seal on getting me to play video games is Baldur’s Gate 3.

Now the main reason that getting me to play Baldur’s Gate was not a major hassle was because I knew that it was essentially dungeons and dragons. I have been playing D&D for a while now, I have started DMing and it's something that I really love. So starting with a mechanic that I already loved and understood was a great place to start.

But there is so much about Baldur’s Gate that I love. Now obviously I don’t have an extensive background in video games. So I don’t know how to describe or critique the game design or gameplay as a whole. I just know what I like and what I don’t and what my experience has been as a player who knows absolutely nothing about the medium in general. That said, I love the amount of things that you can do in Baldur’s Gate 3. Like obviously there are the main quest things that you reveal as you go through the game but there are also about a million side quests that are available to you. And the game designers had to write these things. I’m just imagining as a DM, having to write 90000 different storylines and options for characters to take in addition to the main storylines. My favorite thing that my husband and I have recently played through is that I get to adopt a little owlbear cub. It's cute and adorable and he’s my little buddy.

I also think it's funny how horny everyone in this game is. Lazel has already slept with Patrick’s character, Gale is after him as well and I’m pretty sure Karlac is also in love with him. And I’ve got Shadowheart and Halsan in my back pocket. They definitely made the game a full role playing experience and I appreciate the thought to detail.

I think that so far the developers have also done a really great job of cranking out patches and fixing bugs so that we don’t have to deal with any weird things that delay gameplay. I love that level of efficiency.

The other thing I really love about this game is the range of party members it gives you. You have so many options on the makeup of your party and I think it's great. Patrick and I just collect people and send them to camp and they all have their own little quests and goals that give us more options for gameplay.

For my first full fledged video game I think Baldur’s Gate 3 was a great choice. I also think trying out other games is going to be a bit of a let down. But it has made me want to play the other Baldur’s Gate games because if I can just play D&D in video game form forever, I am okay with that. I have absolutley nothing to compare this game to in terms of quality but from the other things I've read about the game, other people seem to agree with me.
