A Practical Guide to Modding in Gaming
Here’s how modding can significantly improve a gaming experience.

Modding in gaming refers to the modification or customization of a game by users. This can take many forms, such as the creation of custom skins or models for characters, the creation of new levels or maps, the creation of new gameplay mechanics or rules, and more.
Some games are designed to be highly moddable and even provide tools or software development kits (SDKs) to make it easier for users to create and share their own mods.
Other games may not have official support for modding, but still have a thriving modding community that creates mods using various techniques.
Modding can be a popular way for players to add new content to a game, change the way a game looks or plays, or create entirely new experiences based on a game.
What are the most popular games which have a large modding community?
Many games have large modding communities. Here are some examples include:
- The Elder Scrolls
- Fallout
- Half-Life
- Grand Theft Auto
- Minecraft
- Total War
- Civilization
- Stardew Valley
- Factorio
This is just a tiny sampling of the many games with active modding communities. In general, open-world games, sandbox-style games, or games with expansive modding tools and SDKs tend to have larger modding communities.
However, there are also many mods created for more linear, narrative-driven games as well.
My personal experience with modded games.
In a previous post, I spoke about how modding improved Grand Theft Auto V with completely custom serves created by players. If you like to read more on this topic, you can read my post titled How Modding Has Improved Grand Theft Auto 5.
In this post, I talked about a fan-made launcher for the game called FiveM, which allowed anyone to create a custom server with whatever rules they wanted, such as a role-playing server or a racing-oriented server.
I have spent many hours on role-playing servers with a few of my mates and honestly had more fun than the regular Grand Theft Auto Online experience.
I have also spent a lot of time playing modded Minecraft serves with a few of my friends. I’ve found that there is just so much more to do in Minecraft if you’re playing a modded version.
Previously, I would play on a vanilla server with my mates and get bored of it after a month or so. But after learning certain modpacks, it feels like I’m never going to bed bored.
