That Famous Movie Quote Is Wrong
We All Remember It This Way, But the Truth Is Wild

It’s your friend Mikey Chan, and I was just scrolling through the comments on a recent video of mine when one particular message really stopped me in my tracks. I won’t share the exact comment, but shout-out to the person who sent it in!
You know those moments in life when you hear or see something so completely unbelievable? Like some of the political news headlines we’ve seen over the last few years? This felt exactly like one of those moments for me.
The Best Movie, The Best Quote
I’ve said it before, but my favorite movie of all time is Forrest Gump. Seriously, it’s a total tearjerker, and I absolutely adore it. Like any true fan, I’ve been quoting lines from that movie my whole life.
And the most famous quote of all is, without a doubt, this one. Finish it on your own:
My mom always said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.”
If that’s what you said, then my friends and I are all wrong.
Wait, It’s Not “Is”?
Listen closely to the actual line from the movie:
My mom always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.
It’s “life was like a box of chocolates,” not “life is like a box of chocolates.”
I know, I know. When we talked about the whole Berenstein versus Berenstain Bears thing, it was a divided house. Most of you, like me, remembered the -stein spelling, but a lot of people also clearly recalled -stain.
But I am genuinely curious about this one. How many of you actually remembered the quote with “was” instead of “is”?
A Week of Lies
I’m surprised and honestly pretty upset about this because I quote this line at least once a week! Don’t ask me why, but it’s just one of those movie quotes that randomly pops into my head all the time.
When I found out that the actual quote uses “was,” it felt like I was in an episode of Lost where nothing made any sense anymore. Seriously, I feel like my entire life has been a lie.
This quote might be the thing that finally does it for me. I’m really starting to feel like this reality has been altered somehow. Has someone played a Doctor Who trick on us? Did Marty and Doc mess with the timeline? Is this an Ashton Kutcher Butterfly Effect situation?
Plus, “life was like a box of chocolates” doesn’t even make sense! Forrest Gump isn’t dead when he says it. Or… maybe this is a Sixth Sense kind of revelation, and Forrest Gump has been a ghost the whole time! You know, that would make sense since the kid who could see dead people in The Sixth Sense turned out to be Forrest Gump’s son. (Okay, I’m kidding… mostly.)
Oh, and one last thing: Aren’t there usually little cards or guides inside boxes of chocolates that tell you exactly what’s inside each piece? Just a thought!
Alright, guys, I need to know. Did you remember it as life was like a box of chocolates, or is life like a box of chocolates?
For some reason, thinking about this quote really made me crave chocolate. I wish life really were as awesome as a chocolate bar full of bacon (yes, there are seriously little bacon bits in this one!).
