On February 29th, 1932, four daring German aviators embarked on an extraordinary journey that would take them around the world. Their mission was to seek out new opportunities for the aviation industry, forging lucrative business relationships along the way. Equipped with a versatile aircraft capable of landing on land and water, they anticipated thrilling adventures, but little did they know that their expedition would soon turn into a harrowing nightmare.

The team consisted of pilot Hans Bertram, co-pilot Tom, mechanic Adolph Klausman, and cameraman Alexander von Lagorio, who aimed to capture their epic voyage on film for a future movie. The initial leg of their journey was a resounding success as they flew halfway across the globe, spanning from Italy to Indonesia, over the course of ten weeks. However, their reunion in Jakarta marked the last time all four team members would be together before their fateful separation.

In Shanghai, Bertram and Klausman found themselves alone aboard the aircraft after bidding farewell to their companions. On May 13th, they stopped at a naval airfield in the Dutch West Indies to replace the engine before landing in Cupang to refuel the following day. Little did they know that this would be their final glimpse of the familiar world they left behind, for what awaited them was an unimaginable ordeal.

Their planned journey to Australia, a 520-mile flight to be completed in six hours, quickly transformed into a nightmarish ordeal they would never forget. It was past midnight when their plane soared over the treacherous Timor Sea, expecting to touch down at dawn. However, the sky darkened with menacing clouds, and the aircraft was mercilessly engulfed in a tempestuous storm of thunder, lightning, heavy rain, and powerful winds, violently disrupting their plans.

With no choice but to make an immediate landing, Bertram steered the aircraft toward a desolate region in northern Western Australia, far from their intended destination. Despite having modern navigation equipment at their disposal, they became disoriented and miscalculated their coordinates by approximately 230 miles. Stranded amidst dense jungle thickets, they found themselves in an emergency situation, uncertain of their precise location.

Unfazed by panic, Bertram and Klausman, seasoned travelers with a modest reserve of fuel, opted to rest and conserve their energy. It was during this moment of uncertainty that fate intervened. Branches crackled, and an unexpected encounter unfolded as an Aboriginal man from the local Balanguera tribe emerged from the wilderness. Though their languages failed to bridge the communication gap, they exchanged curious glances before parting ways, awaiting the arrival of a new day.

Determined to continue their quest towards the city of Darwin, they took off once again, only to find themselves quickly running out of fuel. Darwin remained elusive, and they were forced to execute yet another emergency landing, this time in a different bay. Anxiety began to grip them as they faced dwindling supplies of fuel, food, and water, with their true whereabouts remaining an enigma.

Their only glimmer of hope lay in retracing their steps to their initial landing spot, where they hoped to find the Aboriginal man and seek his assistance. As days turned into an agonizing blur of hunger, thirst, and sweltering heat, their situation seemed increasingly dire. However, fate had more arduous trials in store for them. With every step, their strength waned, and they found themselves besieged by an onslaught of aggressive flies, each one eager to take a painful bite.

Desperately fleeing from their tormentors, Bertram and Klausman sought refuge in the waters of the bay, only to be confronted by another perilous adversary—a lurking crocodile. Through sheer determination, they managed to elude the fearsome predator but paid and made a documentary that captured the harrowing journey of survival, showcasing the enduring spirit and resilience of the human will.
