@theestallion has debuted her second studio album and its Hood Feminism at its finest

Whew, chile**, this new Meg album, Traumazine*, is one that I was NOT expecting, but I am so glad I listened. This album is the volcanic-field-slapping paradise of my dreams, and from someone who’s never been a big fan of modern hip-hop, I can say that I was converted after listening to this record.

In case you didn’t know, or you’re Patrick Star, Meg Thee Stallion is a powerhouse Texas-based rapper who slid onto the scene with the wavy “Stalli (like pronouncing stallion in short form)Freestyle” and since then, this Hottie has been on a streak, releasing a string of hits like “Hot Girl Summer”, “WAP”, and other artistically flawless tracks with bold lyrics that promote self-love and women’s empowerment. In short: she’s badass. Her music is ethereal. And this album is now in my favorites.

Now let me tell you why this is the only album you need this summer in three of my favorite cuts.

First is “Ungrateful”, a track featuring the enigmatic Key Glock, another southern rapper that’s definitely worth a listen if you like raw and urban music, and written by Meg, herself, Key Glock, and music producer Krishon Gaines. This song was produced by Bandplay.

“Ungrateful” describes a feeling that I’m not sure everybody would identify with, but I know I do: Old “friends” who secretly want your life. One of my favorite lines from the song says “You would never be you if I wasn’t your muse” and baby, let me tell you, the scream that escaped me probably scared the neighbors, but it was only because I was so excited. What I will say is that if you’re the girl who found out that your mom’s “everybody ain’t your friend” warning was correct WAY TOO LATE, you’ll love this song. Meg really got her feelings out and spoke to my unchecked angry girl on the inside. I have cut off so many fake friends, so Izza yes for me. 10/10.

Next is “Not Nice”, written by Meg, Daniel Simmons, Duevon Desir, and Sean Porterfield. Produced by D-Sims, P.Raw, and SSV. This song has no features.

“Not Nice” is similar to “Ungrateful” in the idea that we don’t have time for these fake a**, hating a** (*ahem*) heaux. What makes it different, though, is that Meg’s voice stands out as distinct, self-assured, and quick-witted since she appears on the track alone- meaning we get her alllll to ourselves for a flawless 2 minutes and 46 seconds. Since it’s the third track on the album, it comes right after the above-mentioned “Ungrateful” and seamlessly keeps the experience engaging. My favorite line, like the name of this article and this song, is “F*** it, b*tch, I’m not nice, I’m the sh*t! I’m done with bein’ humble ’cause I know that I’m that b*tch.” because, c’mon, *flips hair* I AM that b*tch. And so are you! Didn’t Lizzo tell you already? *wink*

Moving along, my third and final favorite from this album is no other than the smash hit, “Sweetest Pie” featuring English Singer-Songwriter and another fave of mine, Dua Lipa. The song is written by Meg, Dua Lipa, Nija, Clarence Coffee Jr., John Walsh Homen, Sarah Hudson, Stephen Kozmeniuk, Oscar Leo-Christensen, and Parker. The song was produced by Parker, Platinum Libraries, Romano, and Koz.

I remember my first time hearing this song and, ya know, love is a city with many parishes; there’s a different section for all kinds of different feelings. I was immediately enamored by so much of it at one time. What stood out most, though, was the production quality and Meg’s flow. My favorite line in this song is more colloquial than the previous ones, and every time I hear it, I get a nice, hearty belly laugh. It’s this: “Toes curling like they th’owing gang signs, on Crip” and what’s understood doesn’t have to be explained, right?

Aight.

Now, I’m only giving you three songs because you gotta trust me, it’s worth every minute of your time. Traumazine is just another piece of the puzzle that is the big, fabulous picture of what I’m confident will be a long and fruitful career for Meg Thee Stallion. I strongly suggest you give it a listen as soon as you can.

Matter of fact, go now. And follow me on Twitter.

Enjoy yall. And be safe.

*Traumazine was defined on Meg’s Instagram as “a chemical released in the brain when forced to deal with painful emotions caused by traumatic events and experiences”
