Improving the Resilience of the Health Service. This significant day pays tribute to the contributions of nurses around the world and also aims to create awareness on their milestone in raising the quality and accessibility of health care systems.

The date itself is significant, as it’s the birthday of Florence Nightingale, whom many credit with founding modern nursing. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965 with a range of activities designed to educate and engage the public, and to highlight the dedication and hard work of nurses.

Florence Nightingale's Legacy

Florence Nightingale was a revolutionary figure in healthcare and social reform. She was born on May 12, 1820, and became well-known in the course of the Crimean War (1853-1856), in which she was manager of a team of nurses.

Her contributions during this period specifically her work to enhance sanitation and prevention of the spread of disease in military hospitals became well known.

Nightingale's commitment to the welfare of soldiers made her ''The Lady with the Lamp'' a title aided by her practice of making rounds and tending to the wounded at night.

Nightingale cared for the sick and wounded in times of war, but she also changed the very world of medicine and formed the basis of modern nursing practices.

Her book Notes on Nursing What It Is and What It Is Not became a seminal text, and she is credited with establishing the importance of hygiene, sanitation and patient care in hospital settings.

She had founded the Nightingale Training School for Nurses at St Thomas Hospital in London in 1860, the template for nursing schools across the world. Her legacy of advancing nursing education and the professionalization of nursing shaped healthcare systems globally.

The Role of Nurses Today

The role of nurses has since evolved tremendously, although Florence Nightingale's legacy still carries an influence over nursing practices.

Nurses are now recognized as critical health care providers, playing an integral role in the quality of care across settings, including hospitals and clinics and community health organizations.

Nursing provides initial contact with patients, nursing understands the importance of prolonged care, and tending not just the patient but also the soul in need of healing.

The duties of nurses may include administering medications, monitoring patient conditions, educating patients and families, and advocating for patients' rights. Ensuring quality care delivery and support through evidence-based practice models of care has become synonymous with nursing.

Their clinical expertise contributes significantly to themanagement of maintaining both routine and complex health conditions and their ability to respond is crucial to outcomes in emergency situations, thus making them a mainstay component of healthcare teams (nursing Activates, 2020).

The Nightingale Pledge A Commitment Continuing

Florence Nightingale's most famous contribution to nursing remains the Nightingale Pledge, a modified version of the Hippocratic Oath that still is taken by nurses around the globe. It is a reminder of the ethical responsibilities and duties that nurses are expected to abide by throughout their careers. It highlights professionalism, compassion, and commitment to the care of patients.

The pledge states

"I swear by that which I hold most sacred in life that I will pass my life in purity and in accordance with my profession'' it begins.

I will refrain from that which is harmful and wicked, and will not receive nor knowingly administer any destructive drug. I will do my utmost to keep my profession at a high standard and to elevate it when necessary and will keep secret all matters of a personal nature entrusted to my keeping and all family affairs which may come to my knowledge in the practice of my calling.

I will be true to my work and devoted to the welfare of those people in my charge.
