Unicorns

Unicorns are everywhere, in the form of Toys, Bags, Makeup, Movies, Books, Wigs and I can go on all day.

I don’t think that you can go anywhere today without seeing a Unicorn.

We went shopping for a few last-minute Christmas items at the mall.  We wandered into Kmart to get Raven a new costume for the beach as hers had gotten a little small.

On our way to pay, we had a long queue to stand-in, last-minute shoppers and it was crazy busy.

While in the queue we saw a little girl with a beautiful pink pencil case it had unicorns on and a lot of glitters, a unicorn plush key ring on the shelf as well as sweets in unicorn packaging.

Further down ahead of us was another little girl wearing a unicorn Alice band with the horn and some ribbon wound around the band.

All ages seem to be drawn to these beautiful animals, my eldest daughter Shirlee who is 23 years old loves anything to do with unicorns, she has a Unicorn onesie,  two pairs of unicorn slippers, bags and even plush toys and pillows on her bed.

My youngest of 4 years Raven is just as bad, anything unicorn needs to be placed in the trolley.

Below are two of her unicorns the plush unicorn on the right came all the way from South Africa with us on the plane. Originally I had bought it for Shirlee.

Raven took a liking to it and I ended up purchasing another one for Shirlee to keep Raven happy.

The Unicorn on the right we bought for Ravens birthday in September from K-Mart.

So I thought we could look into this beautiful magical creature.

What is a Unicorn?

A unicorn is a mythological animal or wild woodland creature resembling a horse or goat with a single spiralling horn on its forehead.

Some say it was actually a Rhino seen back in the day which the imagination turned into a magical creature, and the unicorn was born.

Another animal that could have been mistaken as the unicorn is a one-horned deer, it is an abnormality but there has been a deer found with one horn rather than two.

How did unicorns come about?

It was referred to in the ancient myths of India and China.

The unicorn appeared in early Mesopotamian artworks.

The first written account of a unicorn was in Western literature.

A Greek doctor Ctesias of Cnidus in the 4th century BCE wrote of this single-horned "wild ass" roaming the eastern part of the world.

He had learned of this creature from fellow travelers and had never witnessed it for himself, he then went on to describe it as the size of a horse, with a white body, purple head, and blue eyes.

On its forehead was a cubit-long horn colored red at the pointed tip, black in the middle, and white at the base.

He noted that it was very fast and difficult to capture.

It’s been said that it was probably the Indian Rhinoceros.

In Celtic mythology, the unicorn was a symbol of purity, innocence, masculinity and power.

Some items that are in my local store

On the left of this image, we have a magical BFF unicorn collection toy.

The collectible Unicorns are a really nice additional surprise in a gift for a girl however I find these little collectibles to be rather pricey.

On the right is a Smash compartment lunch box, these are great for kids school lunches, and you can pack a lot of variety in the separate sections. I do find it to be a little on the heavy side.

Unicorn Craze

So there definitely is a unicorn craze out there and I had to share this last image with you. When I saw it in the store it actually made me laugh.

So even lions now have horns.

So if you had any questions about the unicorn I hope that I have covered it above.

The imagination is an amazing tool, something we need to encourage our children to have as its a huge part of childhood development.

As always I hope that you found this blog interesting if you did and you feel others would enjoy, please feel free to share it.

Keep the imagination alive, let it run wild and remember - You Not Alone.
