Time to breath

For Rosie

By Mark AndrewsPublished 5 years ago 5 min read

The Neurologists held Rosie's hand, tears rolled down her cheeks just as they did for Peter who sat beside his wife her hand clasp in his. "Frontotemporal Dementia" he uttered. "Aggressive and incurable" he reiterated .

At 55 Rosie was very young to be afflicted with such a disease ,Peter thought on the drive back to the Ranch. He had noticed the behavioral changes for the last few years but had put it down to menopause , the short temper the aggressive responses. But now he could put the other pieces of the puzzle together, the risk taking the lack of care for her once beloved pets, it all started to make sense now.

The 4 hour drive was mostly silent , She had not wanted to discuss things right now she had told him. So left with his thoughts he drew on his vast intellect and by the time they had arrived he had a plan in place.

I cant cure this he had agreed with himself . The only option is to wait until a cure is found , which somewhere in the future it will he assured . So he deducted, the only option left is to fast track things and make the Hudson Chamber, he had been designing for the last 20 years of his Astrophysicist tenured position at Nasa.

Dr Peter Chambers-Hudson had long held the position that Black holes were not the gravitational pits that most in his field had agreed on, but indeed tears in the space time continuum that could be navigated.

The first issue at hand is money he wrote on his list he had titled Time to breath. His prototype model the size of a loaf of bread could not send Rosie into the future but once finished , could send his little black book of notes forward one day to himself , and thus could be returned back in the chamber with all the sports results for the day noted in it.

He would need a massive power source, one that could keep the life size Chamber in action until a cure could be found. that would require a renewable source capable of 200MW it was doable but he would need at a minimum 20 million dollars.

He turned his bank account of $64324, into 36 million within 4 hours of the days gambling fixtures , he then thought enough is enough and burnt the page from the book.

He resigned his position that day at Nasa and within 3 months his prototype was ready to go, he had installed 20 diesel generators to power his small model, and he was the laugh of his local town Westbury falls as to why anyone would need so many.

The Hudson Chamber worked by encompassing the unit with cadmium constructed spheres not unlike a gyroscope , this was placed into a vacuum chamber and once powered it increased its oscillation to a speed that created a gravitational field so strong that it could tear through dimensional fields that earth was built on and leave the chamber in a continuous position in time. meaning that tomorrow peter could open the chamber write down the results and then replace in the chamber for him to access the day before all in a second of switching the unit on.

He had done his homework , 20 years of study had led to this moment. He switched the Chamber on , the green light of dimensional severance came on immediately, followed with a red light for its stopping and a green light again for its resumption .

This all happened in an instance and it could have easily been missed if not for a slow motion camera installed to record just this event.

Peter held his breath, Could it have been this easy, well as easy as 20 years of hard slog can be he thought. He opened the chamber drew out the leather bound book, and opened it to todays date.

There in his own writing was the results of every horse race sporting game with scores as well as a smiley face with a comment we can do this.

It took over a year for the full construction to be finished, in that time he had to deal with Police enquiries after many bookmaking outlets approached them as to his massive winning habits. He also had local and national media taking interest as try as he may to keep it quiet, the power grid construction was of a scale that it drew its own attention. many had labeled him a Nutcase , he often thought they may just be right , but Rosie's plight was all that really mattered the rest was white noise.

Rosie had deteriorated badly, she could no longer remember the previous days events, she could not speak, she had grown even more aggressive and had twice stabbed peter with a Kitchen knife in a fit of anger, both time in his hand both times while he fed her meatloaf. He had thus decided to remove that from the menu.

Finally all was ready , Rosie had been slowly introduced to the now Human sized chamber , it had a soft fitted chair against the back wall, a Harness just in case Rosie had decided to go on a rampage before activation, and a small led screen with Gomer Pyle shows on a loop . This was Rosies most loved sitcom. It had no windows the Light from the cadmium spheres would have blinded anyone inside.

He strapped her in, tears rolled down his face, he had tested the unit with other living creatures and all had returned unharmed. But never the less this was the end or the new beginning with Rosie.

He had left instruction in his will for the property to be left alone for 100 years after his passing and then donated to Nasa. So that meant that within the next 130 years plus given that at 58 peter assessed that he still had 30 years left using the current averages. A cure for Rosie needed to be found.

He set the slow motion Camera on, he kissed Rosies hand she looked at him and spoke , she had not uttered a word now for over 3 months. I love you Pete, see you soon she uttered in a slurred speech.

He switched the Chamber on, Green, Red Green.

His heart was not just beating through his chest it was deafening his senses so loud it was thumping. He switched off the machine and grabbed for the Latch. He opened it, Nothing , no one.

A flash drive sat in the chair , he quickly gathered it and slid it into the port on his PC.

Rosie is alive and well, the screen scripted, but you have work to do for us first Peter before you can join her.

A picture of a young Girl came on the screen, then a bio of her.

Finally three words followed.

She Must Die .

The Chamber slid into action again, he spun around , the green light flickered on and off 3 times , then a muffled mans voice from within could be heard. For god sakes let me out Pete.
